When I was a kid, I wanted to go to Summer camp ✨ and never did. But I danced & sang on electrical boxes, snuck into swimming pools, and caught tons of lightening bugs. I always found a way to make Summer fun. . Two weeks ago, I headed to YL convention, which was amazing and filled with joy, but it's not camp. Brandon flew into SLC the last day, and together we drove to central Colorado. We were surrounded by the stunning Collegiate Peaks, a flowing river, gorgeous trees, and wonder as far as our eyes could see. ⛰ We were most definitely not there for camp... or vacation. . Tucked away in the beautiful town of Buena Vista, CO, is a counseling center called ”Cross Roads of the Rockies.” The decision to go was made in a season of desperation when we realized that years of grief & pain don’t just go away because of confession and repentance. Healing still needs to happen. How’s that for fun? . And let me just tell ya, friends... . ➖ There weren’t water balloon fights (or any fights) - just learning what it is for God to be a shield about us. . ➖ There weren’t late night giggles, but there was space for deep soul rest. . ➖ There weren’t long hikes on trails, but heart issues were navigated and ministered to. . ➖ There wasn’t an alter call for a (re)commitment, but there were sweet, gentle reminders about our (his and mine) identities in Christ. . Is our marriage fixed? I won't be as naive about that as I was about my singing skills during my childhood Summer concert series , but what I will say is that last week changed my life. ❤️ We have done YEARS of counseling, led Recovery groups, and none of it compared to how we saw the Holy Spirit move through humble and wise therapists over the course of 5 those days. . There won't be another Summer spent feeling hopeless, sorrowful, angry and resorting to denial to deal. It's not what God intended. Redemption is possible, and is so often a journey. I share because we all need that reminder (sometimes over-and-over again), and maybe because you’re a low point and have never heard of Cross Roads? It’s an eternal investment that will change you more than sweaty, stinky Summer camp. There’s hope.

A short term stress is good for us - for example, an intense physical work out. And short-term negative emotions as such are a feedback from our mind and psyche that something requires our attention; that feedback is good because it gives us information about us. What is NOT good for us is a state of prolonged distress. If we subject our bodies to never ending physical work out, without giving them time to restore, our health deteriorates. . If we experience strong negative emotions for an extended period of time, that too leads to the deterioration of health. . Books can be and have been written on how to manage stress and negative emotions. How to put at least some thoughts in a couple of words?. . 1. Consider not pushing away negative emotions, but accepting them, observing them, and asking yourself (or them - if you can use NLP techniques), ‘what message does it carry for me? What valuable information is my psyche trying to point out for me?’. Then they dissipate. .. . 2. Step back and revisit, what I call, the assembly point of your psyche and mindset: your true priorities and guiding stars in your life. .. That which keeps you up at night - does it REALLY matter on a grand scale of things? . . And when a 10 - 20 years older version of you looks back at this worrisome situation, will that older you tell the current you, ‘yes, you should worry about it. Not only the situation is truly that important, but also worrying about it will help.’? If not, you have the answer. .. 3. Closely related to #2. I wrote earlier about the conclusions from the Blue Zones and Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. True friends, family, spirituality, a sense of purpose in life - turn your mind and life towards those aspects. Anyone else feel pressure to be happy? ‍♀️ • Ok, so this is an issue that doesn’t just impact moms. We live in a cultural obsession with positive thinking. And while there is a healthy threshold for positivity, we’ve gone wayyyy pass it. • When how happy we are, or appear to be, defines our success, it’s easy to see why so many new moms struggle with the not so happy moments, thoughts, and emotions that come with carrying out this often-hard gig. • However, no matter how loud the “think positive” cheerleaders scream, you need to know that happiness isn’t completely within your control and it doesn’t define your worth, strength, or experience. • In a society growing increasingly intolerant of negative feelings, the truth is, the most emotionally healthy people amongst us are not happy all the time. No one is. To believe otherwise is only going to make the already hard, even harder. • Real psychology promotes emotional health as that ability to tolerate negative emotions and to use them to your advantage. It encourages embracing joy when it appears and getting curious about everything else as it arises. You see, if we allow ourselves to sit in the natural discomfort that comes with our “negative” emotions, we’ll often find that it’s our negative emotions that help us identify and honor our most important values and needs. • However, this is much easier said than done. Even as a licensed therapist I regularly struggle with this AND that’s ok!! This isn’t a task to accomplish or a goal to achieve. My ability to easily slip into dreaming, envisioning and reflecting is quite impressive. ✨ Where are my fellow visionaries and dreamers? ‍♀️ For as often as I can recall hysterical things from years ago (like on prom night when I walked into a glass wall and nearly knocked myself out), I can also have a tendency to try to make sense of and reconcile past hurts in my head. . But God is doing a new thing. The God of Israel, who created the heavens and earth out of nothing and raised up the nation of Israel, again out of nothing, is doing a new thing! It’s present tense, friends. The same God who worked in the past still works now. . “New” isn’t easy, and we don’t always see the Promised Land, but we can be conscious of the soul work happening and walk by faith. Do you choose to see hope in the wilderness? More often than not, a child's anger is shunned by the adults around them. They are usually told things like, "That's not very nice. Don't you love me? Why are you being mean to me?"⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Unfortunately, that's the best case scenario. For those of us who experienced childhood traumas, anger and lashing out in self protection were healthy responses. But when the people perpetrating the traumas are big adults, anger and lashing out are not only not an option, they could be dangerous choices. So our survival selves kick in and suppress our anger and help us be more compliant and likely dissociated so we can survive. And usually what happens is that anger gets turned in on ourselves. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ And that self loathing follows us into adulthood. Our work (with the help of a coach or therapist) is to redirect that anger and allow it to come out so we are no longer a prisoner to the feelings that weren't safe to be felt long ago. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ There are no bad feelings. Feelings are good. Feelings won't hurt you. It's the pushing them down that will. . What do you do to “let it go”? Do you pray, eat, read, reflect, craft, gamble, work or avoid it altogether? It’s so important for us to allow our temporary feelings of sadness, stress, betrayal, fear, jealousy and to recognize that they are only temporary. It’s unhealthy to avoid & always pretend everything is ok & also unhealthy to STAY in these feelings. Balance is the key to health in all areas.

H A L F W A Y T H E R E // It has been a roller coaster of a ride to get to half way but I am finally there. (I’m not really one for half naked pictures these days, but it’s a marker in my development) The emotional turmoil of being pregnant after pregnancy loss is EXHAUSTING! You never stop worrying about what might happen and if this pregnancy is ‘the’ one!! It really puts a perspective on life and pregnancy after suffering. But I am half way there with this #rainbowbaby I will be getting one more ultrasound to check the growth in a few weeks as there may be an issue....but I am tackling one day at a time and enjoying the teeny tiny flutters!!
