At the age of 12, Ceija Stojka (1933-2013) was freed from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany in 1945, bearing the tattoo ‘Z6399’. Born into the Lovara community, a Roma gypsy group who had settled in Austria, she lost most of her family during the Holocaust. Stoika went on to become a published author, activist and self-taught artist aged 55. She rose awareness about the experiences of persecuted Roma communities under the Nazi regime. Aged 9, Stojka and her family were arrested when Germany annexed Austria. ‘Gypsies were forced to register as members of another ‘race’. Our campground was fenced off and placed under police guard.’ While her father was sent to Dachau, the rest of the family were initially sent to Auschwitz. Stojka’s mother persuaded the Nazis that her daughter was older, so that she could work rather than be sent to the gas chamber. Stojka used her art to deal with the trauma of the holocaust, once saying: ‘I picked up a pen because I had to open myself, to scream.’ Her works depict her memories of life before the war, whilst alluding to the terror and chaos she witnessed as a child. One of the few Romani gypsies in Austria who survived the Holocaust, (in which approximately six million Jews and eleven million non-Jews died), Stojka felt the need to document her childhood experiences, publishing her autobiography ‘We live in hiding: Memories of a Romani-Gypsy.’ Her brothers, Karl and Mongo also published books about their experiences. Stojka’s story stands out in a society where great prejudice against gypsy communities still exists, despite the acknowledgement of their historical persecution. In fact, Romani gypsies were the second-largest group of people to be killed on racial grounds under the Nazis, who considered them to be ‘racially impure.’ Only in the 1970s did the West German Federal Parliament classify their persecution as being racially motivated, with many scholars ignoring the statistics about their deaths until the 1980s. Stojka died in 2013, aged 79. Today would have been her #birthday

May 23, 1942, Tova Mendel (with kerchief) and Salomon Findling (tall man behind Tova) and their children Frederika, Helena, Mikulas and Israel, along with other Jews, being deported from Stropkov, Slovakia. Stropkov was home to a vibrant Jewish community for hundreds of years. In 1941, the Slovakian authorities closed down Jewish businesses and seized Jews for forced labor. In March and April 1942, young Jewish men and women were deported to Majdanek and Auschwitz. In May, entire families were deported.
