Alexandra Place: The case of the missing building. Or rather, most of it.This is a bit long, and maybe a bit too historical for light-reading instagram but I swear I’m not doing all this research just to post ‘cool building’, so strap in…. This lovely flat-iron corner building, whilst it looks like a pub, was residential. It formed part of a larger building that houses 64 flats and formed the Rochdale Road tenements, the patch of land had been reserved as a means to widen Rochdale Road. The ground floor had two shops, the entrance to one being the very corner that we still have today. There are plenty of tales of crime and death in the archives for the residents of the tenements, and those who lived on Sudell Street over the years. In 1926 three boys drowned after paddling in the canal, unaware of a sudden 6 feet drop, they fell in. 14 people dived in to save them but no one could, it took the entire day to even recover their bodies. A young girl, Ann Darcy was unlucky enough to be stood on the street outside a barbers on Rochdale Road when the barber, James Rowan, was having a huge row with his wife. He picked up a kettle of boiling water and threw it at his wife, it missed and flew into the street hitting Ann on the head. James came to the door and said to his wife: ‘You will be satisfied now, you have done it now!’ (eugh, James, really?!) The girl died from her injuries. Another man loaned £40 to ‘an unemployed infant’ (aged 20) to set up business as a tobacconist but instead used the money for ‘life necessities’ (food and rent) and he failed to pay it back. In a rapid change of events the judge said he was liable to pay back the money but not the interest...then he ‘ordered his immediate execution’. Henry Morris, a 28 year old painter was seriously injured whilst working at London Road fire station when part of the roof collapsed, its possible his arm was ripped off. On the petty crime end of the scale Samuel Taylor was charged with embezzlement of £28 from his employer. Another man was arrested after falsely dealing horses. Several people were charged for using defective weights and measures, and many barrow hawkers were fined for overpricing apples.
