Sustainable travel = being prepared when you book a day trip to the jungle. I will never forget visiting this incredible Mayan wonder, Tikal, in northern Guatemala for a number of reasons, but one is the number of people I donated my mosquito repellent to! Out of my locally guided minibus of 16, only one other person thought to bring any! Note guys: mosquitoes live in the jungle, they also are the deadliest animal worldwide, killing 830,000 people in 2015 alone. Compare this to the 6 killed by sharks and 580,000 killed by humans in that same year and you'll get the magnitude of what we're talking about. Mosquitoes ain't a joke! I don't repost pics much, but in case anyone hasn't heard about the reverse-ban on elephant trophy imports by the USA, now you have. That's right, until yesterday, it was illegal to import elephants poached in Southern Africa, to the USA but now, rich tourists with no respect for our beautiful planet can go in, throw some money to operators and return with a material possession that strokes their ego. Is it not bad enough that elephants are used as props for circuses, whipped into line so tourists can ride them in Asia and that the ivory trade kills them simply for their tusks?! In Africa, Botswana has outlawed hunting, but other countries still rely on it to make money to battle poachers and keep their elephant populations healthy. I thought about this before I read the article (link in bio), however when I read the words National Rifle Association and Safari Club, I realised my first thoughts were right. This ban has NOTHING to do with helping elephant conservation and EVERYTHING to do with rich guys wanting to shoot elephants. Why on earth anyone would want to shoot an elephant anyway?! I've never felt more humbled than when, back in 2006 on Safari in Namibia, I witnessed a herd drinking at a waterhole. After some time just watching them in awe, one of the baby elephants slipped over his own trunk and fell into the water! Just like humans would do, the entire herd moved over, creating enough space to allow the "ambulance" elephants to come in and help the little guy out of the water, console him and usher him away to safety. I had tears in my eyes it was so beautiful! So, what can we do? Really, the main thing for someone in our position, is to share these posts like those on @dswt (thanks legends ) to raise awareness, sign a petition and condone abusing elephants! So today, just like back in my days of triathlon, I headed out for a long cycle with my friend to this amazing part of Sydney: West Head. Located in the Ku-Ring-Gai @nswnationalparks, West head is an amazing place for Cyclists to escape the traffic and enjoy amazing scenery ‍♀️ We also found so many lovely car drivers who were giving us adequate space and being patient to pass us, plus, this was our pit stop view.
