. . . Al llegar al Parque Nacional Murchison Falls en Uganda, lo primero que nos dijeron fue que los animales eran los “dueños” del parque, y que nosotros éramos meros invitados. Los animales se mueven a sus anchas e incluso visitan el campamento de noche. Está totalmente prohibido tocarlos o molestarlos de cualquier manera (esto incluye a los insectos y lagartijas que se cuelan en las tiendas de campaña). Estoy cansada de ver gente que utiliza a los animales para su propia diversión y entretenimiento. El turismo con animales es una cuestión difícil, y no siempre está claro lo que está bien y lo que está mal. Por mi parte, estoy intentando que mis decisiones al viajar tengan el menor impacto posible en los animales y en el entorno: nada de transporte en animales, ni visitas a lugares en los que los animales estén encerrados, ni atracciones en las que drogan a animales salvajes para que el turista de turno pueda hacerse la foto de rigor. Al fin y al cabo, nosotros somos los invitados y ellos los dueños. *Rant over*

If a place is overtouristed, does that mean we shouldn’t visit? ⁣ ⁣ One thing we’ve learned through our tourism work and through travelling is that there aren’t easy answers to overtourism. The fact that you’re reading this post likely means that you really care and that you are aware of your footprint. ⁣ ⁣ We can’t predict the future, but we do know that tourist numbers are only going to increase.⁣ ⁣ We are not saying that we shouldn’t visit “overtouristed” destinations (indeed it’s going to get harder to avoid them as their numbers will grow). But instead there are things we can do: ⁣ ⁣ Try to visit during off or shoulder season⁣ Try staying a night or longer in popular “day trip” spots to spread more benefit - and enjoy some quiet in the early mornings⁣ Try to avoid the tourist-traps: The mass produced souvenirs, rip off cafes and restaurants in famous places, etc. ⁣ Stay curious: Learn about the history, the culture, the food, the people⁣ Be respectful as always - a “cute alley” is someone’s home, say no to single use plastic, etc etc. It’s just about being a good fellow human ⁣ ⁣ What are your tips for overtouristed destinations?
