Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryō Certification Yoroi with Maru ni Igeta family crest, probably from the Kitamura (北村), a family of doctors and poets, made by Saotome school. The origin of Saotome School (早乙女派) are dated around the sixth year of Keichō (慶長1601). Saotome katchūshi were active in Odawara (小田原) in Sōshū province and in Shimotsuma (下妻) and Fuchū (府中), both located in Hitachi province, that means it is safe to assume that the school had its origins in the Kantō region. When it comes to the genealogy of the Saotome School, we have quite many names of individual craftsmen to work with but no solid references or data that show us how they were exactly related and connected. Saotome School helmets, also called Saotome-bachi (早乙女鉢) lit. “Saotome helmet bowls”were made since the Sengoku period in great quantity. They are of an excellent shape, of an excellent forging quality, and their thickly chiseled signatures are very legible. Most of the helmets have a highly elegant bulbousness along both the front and the rear area, a shape that is consequently referred to as “Saotome style”. Nevertheless, the interpretations of Saotome-bachi are actually quite multifarious. When we focus on the most common Saotome-bachi, which are 62-plate kabuto. The shiten no byō are mostly installed on the eight plate from the front and rear (not counting the central front plate) and at a relative high position.

Haruta Katsusada (春田勝定) was a famous armorer of the Mid Edo period, 18th century. Ranked jōjō, he made very elegant helmets in Saotome style. Here we have an excellently forged 62-plate Suji Kabuto. The iron mabisashi with its five za-based rivets and the interpretation with a tehen no za is very typical of his style and elegance. The Haruta (春田) school emerged in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) in Nara. At the beginning of Edo period, the armorers of the school established offshoots in Kyōto, Edo, and in the larger fiefs all over the country. During the Muromachi period, they had made Akoda Nari Kabuto (Pumpkin Shaped Samurai Helmet). These helmets were also diplomatic gifts, chosen to be armours of the highest quality, but with the Edo period, they responded to what was from now on in fashion, namely excellently forged Suji Kabuto. The elegant Maedate from early 19th, with no restorations, has been lost by an Auction House in 2017 and finally “found” again. So it has again is elegant Maedate✨

Here we have an excellent tsuba in Shibuichi, copper and silver alloy, by Master Gotō Ichijō (後藤一乗), from late Edo period with engraved a Poem by Matsuo Bashô (松尾芭蕉, 1644-1694); from his poem collection Account of Exposure to the Fields (野ざらし紀行, Nozarashi Kikô). The Poem says: Butterflies flit, that is all, amid the field of sunlight.  The Tsuba has a lobed shape, copper and silver alloy, high relief, thin “hair” carvings, inlay and accentuations, flush inlay, folded-over rim.  Gotō Ichijō signed with the Ichijō name when working in the traditional Gotō style of soft metals, and he used pseudonym Hakuō when signing on iron tsuba. “Ichijō was born on the third day of the third month of Kansei three (1791) as the second son of Gotō Jūjō (重乗), the 4th gen. of the Shichirō´emon line in Kyōto. His first name in his younger years was „Eijirō“ (栄次郎) and, at the age of nine, he was adopted by Kenjō (謙乗), the 5th gen. of the Hachirōbei line. But two years later he started an apprenticeship with Hanzaemon Kijō (亀乗) because of Kenjō´s poor health. When the latter died in the fourth month of the second year of Bunka (1805), Ichijō was nominated the official successor of the Hachirōbei line ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ 蝶乃飛 はかり 野中能 日影可奈 Chô no tobu bakari nonaka no hikage kana.
