This is the Jewish cemetery in Prague - probably one of the most beautiful I have ever seem, also one with a very interesting history! It’s the oldest surviving Jewish burial ground in the world! Earliest tomb stones date back to c1439 and as the graveyard grew And land was scarce - bodies were buried on top of one another over 100s of years! Over 12,000 tombstones in a very small area right in the heart of old town Prague! - it truly was not morbid at all - in fact, very beautiful to my eyes! I’ve been contemplating in my head for days whether or not to do this post. Religion is a sensitive issue in Pakistan, it can easily rile up people especially if you happen to be talking about or defending the “wrong” religion(s). It can easily obfuscate all rational thinking and turn the most benign of individuals into hardcore foaming zealots. I fully understand what I am getting myself into with that being said I think it’s an important part of Karachi’s rich cultural history that needs to be discussed more often hence I decided to go ahead with it. Now with all of that out of the way I recently paid a visit to the Bani Israel Jewish cemetery. It’s one of the last few remaining vestiges of Karachi’s Jewish past. Till partition Karachi was home to around 1000 to 2500 practising Jews. With the creation of the State of Israel that number started to steadily decline however it wasn’t until the 1970’s when antisemitic fervour was at its peak that a large chunk of the city’s Jewish population started to leave the city. Till 1988 however the city was still home to one Jewish house of worship; the Magen Shalome Synagogue. General Zia had ordered for its destruction because of which there was a lot of outcry from the world wide Jewish community, obviously all of this generated a lot of media attention hence before Zia could have it destroyed himself religious hardliners beat him to it and burnt it down. It used to sit right in the middle of Ranchore Lines. Now there’s an ugly apartment complex called Madiha Square built on top of it. Coming back to the cemetery, it’s a small graveyard home to somewhere between 15-20 graves out of which you can only clearly read the Hebrew script on 3-4 tombstones. Right adjacent to the graveyard is a little garden, pointing towards the middle of the boundary wall the cemetery care taker told me that there used to be a door over there. The dead were brought in from that passageway. There used to be a small synagogue right behind the doorway. According to the recent census there are 745 registered Jews in Pakistan. I have yet to meet one. Till then Shalom.
