Riding off into the weekend... Well there’s really no such thing as a true “weekend” for us. Caring for livestock is a 24/7/365 job, and many weekends are spent checking cattle, feeding, irrigating, fixing fence, or other responsibilities that don’t rely on a 9-5 schedule. . . We’re incredibly fortunate to spend every day doing what we love. Caught her sleeping on the job again . . Yesterday we made an afternoon snack delivery to Drake and decided to hop in the combine with him for a few laps around the field. He’s working on combining (or harvesting) oats. Although Alderspring is mostly home to bovines of the beef variety (primarily Black Angus), Ethan and Abby have been putting together a small herd of milk cows. Nellie (pictured) and Lucy are the two matriarchs of the group and they've recently freshened and begun producing milk once again this year. . We've all become quite disparaging of conventional milk from the grocery store, instead preferring raw milk from cows grazing Alderspring pasture few hundred yards from the ranch house. When we can convince Ethan to part with some, it disappears from the refrigerator at an alarming rate. There really is a difference in flavor and fat content. Not to mention how amazing the butter is from these grass fed girls. . They're sweet cows, although they can become quite cantankerous when being milked by someone other than Ethan, of whom they're very trusting. The day ended pretty much like this. After 2 ranches to chore, hundreds of cattle to move multiple miles, hundreds of cattle to sort on multiple ranches, cattle to weigh, tired people, calm cattle, sore everything. However these moments. These moments are what it’s all about. Sometimes We wished they happened by themselves. #groundedgrassfed

Where are we headed? . . What the heck am I doing? . . Why is this happening? . . Ever find yourself asking these questions? Glenn is the head honcho at Alderspring. He is the first to start work in the morning, and the last to stop at night. He is the teacher and advocate for the ranch, man and beast. . When days go long or disaster strikes, somehow he always emerges with his good humor in one piece.  He never passes up the opportunity to humbly learn from old cowboys or new science. With his background in ranger school and forestry, he is passionate about America’s wild country—and dedicated to preserving it. . He’s a great storyteller (you have probably been captivated by his vivid newsletters). And in his spare time, he plays the standup bass and occasional fiddle in the ranch’s unofficial bluegrass band. . He’s also Dad to us seven girls, which is a testament to his patience. He taught each one of us how to ride, ski, and stand in exactly the right place to get a cow to go where we wanted. He didn’t give up on us when we made mistakes. And during thousands of hours horseback on our mountain rangeland, he imparted to us his love for that wild country. . Glenn works and rides alongside his crew, scouts and moves new range camps, oversees the home ranch, talks to customers on the phone, and does a million other things in every aspect of producing incredible beef. You’ll often find him horseback on a windswept ridge, studying beef cattle, grasses, health for humans and animals, and the complex ecosystems of Idaho’s rangelands. . He smells the dirt, touches it with bare hands, and tastes the grass. He’s a visionary, his head in the clouds, but his feet are firmly planted in the soil. .
