Blue light magic . . . . . A really common technique in molecular biology is cloning with bacteria. After my little DNA factories finished replicating millions of copies of my plasmid containing my gene of interest, I used enzymes to selectively cut my DNA out of the vector then ran the whole sample on an agarose gel using electrophoresis to separate by size. Compared to the molecular weight standard on the left, I know that the smaller band towards the bottom is the size that matches my gene while the big one towards the top is my now-empty vector. Using a scalpel and this blue light, I sliced the piece of gel with my band at the right size and then used a commercial kit to purify it. What is a model organism? . Model organisms are organisms that present a clear way of studying a particular aspect of biology.  To be deemed a model organism, that organism must usually be easy to grow / breed, fast to mature, cost-effective to keep, and display clearly an aspect of its function that enables a variety of different studies. All of life sciences, from biochemistry to genetics to neuroscience to medicine, has benefited from the study of model organisms.  The famous fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, was one of the first model organisms of the modern scientific age.  Thomas Hunt Morgan used Drosophila to determine it was chromosomes that were the mode of inheritance for traits, and Drosophila was also the subject of the Heidelberg screens, whereby 20,000 mutant lines were studied to better understand how genes played a role in form and function within an organism. . . My advisor's lab, where I've volunteered for the past year, uses Escherichia coli as a model (and a vector for plasmid manipulation) for bacteria.  The lab I'll be conducting my dissertation in uses Schizosaccharomyces pombe (fission yeast) as a model, as this yeast's cell cycle is very close to that of the human cell cycle, they can be either haploid or diploid, and they are quick and easy to grow. . Other model organisms include Xenopus laevis (African clawed frog) as their eggs are large and see-through, making them perfect for studying vertebrate developmental biology. Zebrafish share 70% genetic homology with humans and are fast developers, making them the go-to choice for not only developmental biology (again, see-through embryos) but also drug discovery and development.  Caenorhabditis elegans (the nematode worm) has unusual developmental traits in that every cell division and every cell fate is exactly the same in every worm, which is not true of most species and certainly not true for humans, making them the perfect model for cell fate studies.  And of course, the lab mouse (Mus musculus) is used ubiquitously the world over as a mammalian model for everything from cancer and disease studies to neuroscience behavioural studies to genetic manipulation.
