Instagram is a highlight reel & it's natural to want to highlight the best parts of our lives. But to quote myself when I started posting about my pregnancy, I don't want to be part of the false narrative that makes motherhood look like a perfectly curated breeze, so here's my truth.
.
Even though I rationally know IG isn't real life, and I, too, have only posted happy pictures of my baby thus far, I still sometimes scroll through my feed & feel bad about myself. Yesterday I cried when I saw a mother effortlessly breastfeeding her baby. Daily I see moms w/smiling newborns talking about how much they're loving their new role...the snuggles, their little buddy who accompanies them everywhere, etc. And I sit there stuck at home w/my beautiful but discontented baby who is only happy & smiling for a small portion of the day, which means I'm only happy & smiling for a small portion of the day. I scroll past adorably styled monthly milestone photos & can only assume these mothers are drugging their babies to get them to sit on their own without crying...that, or am I a bad mom?
.
My baby cries. And whines&fusses. A lot. We've tried acid reflux meds&gas drops; had her lip&tongue tie fixed; been to the lactation consultant, chiropractor & craniosacral therapist; I took a class abt baby sleep; I don't eat dairy, soy, or gluten; over the past 6 weeks I've spent more time researching than I have sleeping, etc, etc, etc. And while some of these have made small differences, I still walk on eggshells trying not to set her off.
.
I already know what you're going to say: you're not a bad mom. Rational-me knows that, but the moments of feeling rational when you're sleep-and-self-care deprived are few & far between. So just know that you can tell a new mom of a screaming baby she's doing everything right, but until her baby is content & happy, she probably won't be either. It's just the way we're wired.
.
If you're the mom of a crying baby & you scroll through IG feeling defeated, you're not alone. I'm here too, caught in a cycle of scrambling to figure out what's wrong w/my baby or accepting that maybe this is just who she is...all while trying not to lose my flippin' mind.

@expectful - "This was taken a few hours after his #tonguetie #liptie laser revision. If you’ve followed our journey, you know how difficult his first 12 weeks of life were. He was never able to nurse properly up until this very point. His ‘tool’ just wasn’t working - I always compare it to ‘trying to eat soup with a fork’. This was the first time he successfully nursed and he was SO dang content. All the hours of worry, heartache, confusion, doubt, pain... they melted away. It saved our breastfeeding journey. I remember this moment so clearly. Pure bliss and relief for him, and my mama heart.”

Beckham had his tongue and lip tie revision three weeks ago today! We have been doing stretches, exercises and speech therapy. Today we saw our pediatrician for a weight check since weight was our biggest concern with ties. {Spoiler alert: he wasn’t on the correct chart- the preemie one.} I am so proud of him because he is doing so well! We are about to graduate alllllll the things. He weighed in at 9 pounds 5 ounces and 22 inches. Woot woot! I blogged about our experience with ties this week so if you’re curious or going through it click the link in my bio! .

What is the oddest piece of advice you were given to prepare for breastfeeding?
In my practice, women come to me exhausted and desperate for help after trying some crazy solutions recommended to them by a good intentioned friend or family member.
But...
IT SHOULDN’T HURT TO NURSE YOUR BABY! When I realized that I was repeating this phrase every day, often shouting it, I decided that a book to help spread the message was in order.
In my experience, more women are prevented from reaching their breastfeeding goals due to pain than any other reason. And the saddest part to me is that women expect it to hurt or do not realize that there are ways to make it comfortable, often by very simple interventions.
This book is purposely short and sweet, easy and fast for a busy mom to read and refer to.

TRUST YOUR MAMA INSTINCTS✨ our sweet boy did end up having a lip tie + also a really bad tongue tie like I thought! when they brought him back to me after the procedure he wasn’t crying, but as soon as he saw me, he made the biggest pout face + started crying... like he was telling on them so I am snuggling the rest of the day away with my little mama’s boy ✨

Issa patiently waiting for her turn ❤️ This mama understands the importance of chiropractic care for the whole family! We were there for this duo while Issa was just a little peanut growing in her mother’s womb. We provided a comfortable environment for her precious baby to grow using the Webster technique! #familychiropracticcare is so important!!! Book your appointments for the whole family and make sure you’re all well adjusted! Forgot how much I love these morning newborn snuggles even after a sleepless night
We survived our first night at home! Still on a major cluster feeding schedule with lots of waking but mamas milk finally came in today so that should help!
It is so amazing to me how natural breastfeeding is and how they brand new babes just pick it up from day 1! He is a rockstar at it so far! Loves to eat and .
