I am a huge under supplier and so happy I was able to increase my supply from a few drops to 1 oz/side. I used to walk around the house with all the blinds and curtains closed, never leave the house unless I had plenty of expressed milk and get engorged or only ever leave if I didn’t think he needed feeding... it took almost 3 months of pain and persistence to gain confidence to feed in public with lots of layers and facing corners and hiding in little rooms until I stopped caring what people might think or what I might look like when my baby needed to eat! I always knew I wanted to breastfeed and I could never ever have guessed how difficult it would be for us, it’s the hardest and most painful thing I have ever gone through (I used to wish I was in labour again!) but I am so glad I pushed through the hard weeks/months and now I don’t see any end in sight. I remember when my husband used to say that he felt guilty that he couldn’t assist me with the night wakings and the breastfeeding. He would often talk about how he felt bad on me. I would joke that it’s a shame his nipples are worthless and how he’s so lucky to get a full nights sleep.... Now, we run like a (relatively) well oiled machine if we’ve had a particularly bad run of nights. Last night I was up all night feeding. Poorly child. 4th night in a row. Today, no questions. I get lunch made for me. I get a bath run for me. I get to moan at him about being tired without any competition being made. I get cups of tea by the bucketload. I get a husband who is the modern day version of a ‘village’. Because people often talk about the importance of mothers having a village. About how we don’t have the same set up as we have done in previous generations. The family setup. The women being around to support the mother. People move away, and the family dynamics are very different these days. But as far as I’m concerned, the mothers village of previous generations has been replaced by the modern day, hands on fathers. And what a blessing they are. It’s not easy finding the right way that works for each family. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day... But when mums are breastfeeding, dads should NEVER feel useless, or inadequate that they are unable to help; For they have automatically fallen into the role of having an entire village on their shoulders.
