Grief is absolutely without gender. Still, when my mom died a few years after I transitioned medically, I was clearer than I’d ever been on the broader cultural message that performing my “masculinity” (in the hegemonic sense of control, power, autonomy) was more important than my mental health, wellbeing, or even my reality. I didn’t cope well. I isolated, got into fights, overworked, and shut down. It took learning to fight, grounding myself in my body, admitting that I needed help, and writing a whole book about how I lost my connection to my humanity and found it again by challenging toxic masculinity. It took crying. I love the possibilities offered in this illustration by @refugeingrief. If you are going through it, the bravest thing you can do is ask for help. And if you know someone suffering, the best thing you can do for them is offer it. Grief knows no gender but we’ve constructed harmful gender scripts into it. Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. Help each other get free.

I used to be the master of this. I would see an often difficult “truth” in someone and would directly call out those sensitive places. I would probe, and I would stand on my righteous high horse trying to get them to just “see” what I saw so that we would be free from the awkward elephant in the room. But really, if I dig underneath all of that, it was partly so that “I” would be free of my own discomfort and anxiety. Needless to say, I lost some pretty great friendships. Their physical bodies remained present, but the trust and safety in those relationships eroded. . . The reality is, that we can’t always get our people to see what we see .. even if it’s in their best interest. The other reality is, that it (isn’t) always in their best interest to see all the hard things, especially all at once. Difficult truths take time to integrate and come up. We need to give other people permission to visit their wounds when they are capable of handling the intense emotions that come up with them. We need to shift the focus from “them” to “us” and look inwards to see what is being triggered inside of (us). . . Some difficult truths (need) to be called out in order for a healthy relationship to be possible. But other uncomfortable truths, have room for flexibility, and patience. . . “I’m sensing that you may be struggling with something.” “How can I support your process? “ “’I’d love for you to feel safe to share what’s happening .. but I’m willing to wait if you can’t yet.” . . Part of our work is learning to create safety for our partner even when it feels counterintuitive. It’s learning to lean back and grow our tolerance for discomfort .. for the unknown .. for tolerating the parts of our partner that are still tender and foreign to them. Our partner is not always going to be on the same timeline as us. Some experiences will require more time for them to integrate than we will feel comfortable to give. But I have found that learning to tolerate those discomforts are just as important as the sharing of difficult truths. #coachingwithsilvy . . The amazing artwork is by @andre_m_medina
