Hi friends! As I approach my second Adult Health and Pharmacology exams, I wanted to share with you how I prepared for my first exam and what I’ve changed for the exams coming up. • : First I reviewed my PowerPoint’s and then I wrote out each disease process’s clinical manifestations, causes, populations at risk, risks of the disease, Tx, how it’s Dx, and anything extra my professor wanted us to focus on on a dry erase board. This made it easier for me to make connections and differentiate the s/s of one disease from another. Picmonic provides countless videos on each concept and I found it helpful to do a quick review before bed so that I am receiving the information visually as well. It helps me know where the gaps in my learning are and what I need to further review. After that I do practice questions from my Success book! For my second exam I am making a study guide so that my thoughts are more organized but it contains all of the same information listed above. • : I separate the medications by class and wrote out the drugs we needed to know in that class along with it’s indications, adverse reactions, contraindications, and any blackbox warnings or anything significant my professor wanted us to know about that drug. I suggest using different colors to organize your information because it can get overwhelming if everything looks the same. For example, I put black box warnings in red and indications for use in green. Says the patient in pre-op this morning just before ECT with the biggest grin. Truth is I get this a lot. Like a lot a lot “YOU’RE the doctor?!”, “Wait.....ok”, “Ooooooh YOU’RE the doctor”.....and I simply reply “yes ma’am/sir”. People say this for many of their own internal reasons.....whether it be good or bad. But I always take it as a compliment . Why? Because their reaction is a reminder that God always exceeds man’s expectation. It’s a steady reminder of God’s will trumping that of societal or perceived norms. It reminds me of His grace, guidance, and divine appointment. It reminds me that He often puts you in places that it doesn’t seem like you belong to fulfill a need. I know that I don’t look like the expectation many people believe they will encounter when they meet their doctor. I’m a young black woman with natural hair, baby hairs laid and sometimes cute clothes But I also know that I’ve been appointed, called, and prepared for this . God will place you exactly where He sees fit. He will guide you through the very doors that many believe you don’t belong or where you are the 2%. Why? Because you have a purpose. Because there are souls that He desires you to encounter. Irregardless of what has been the norm. He doesn’t appoint based on societal popularity, but instead purpose . As I smiled in response, I was filled with grateful bless all over again for where God has brought me. So as you face what road lies ahead, I encouraged you to have faith in where He leads you. Don’t discredit yourself. Don’t count yourself out. If He tells you to go, He will also provide every resource you need when you say yes . . . Have you ever been told: “You’re nice for a (fill in the blank)” ? . I recently had a patient say those exact words: “Well you’re nice for a doctor.” . I asked her what she meant to which she replied “docs are usually in a rush, appearing too busy to listen and always talk down to me”. . Are there days where I get frustrated by a medical system that doesn’t seem to work or where I’m pressed for time ? You bet. However I try not to let it impact the respect and care I have for others. I go through my days remembering the importance of being humble, that it’s a privilege to practice medicine and ask myself: “how would I treat this patient if he/she were my family member?” I just want to throw this reminder out there: No matter how many degrees you’ve earned, titles you have, or your status, remember you’re never important too show others kindness. .
