Periods can be a pain in the uterus, literally, but pain is waaaay more than physical - the social, economic and mental impacts all take their toll on our health and well-being. Monthly menses can be debilitating, can exclude us from participation in daily activities and for some, it can be fatal. I don’t owe anyone anything. And neither do you.⠀ ⠀ Bleeding and premenstrually are a time for us to get super clear, for things from the month to surface so that we can examine them and discern whether our beliefs, patterns or behaviors are serving us. Then we get the chance to release them with our blood. It’s not that we are LESS ourselves at this time, but that as the layers shed, we get to see MORE authentically into who we actually are. The veil is thin and it’s a time for getting real.⠀ ⠀ I am bleeding today, releasing a pattern in me that is so old and so carried in my body that I had no idea how much it was affecting every aspect of my life.⠀ ⠀ The pattern: a deeply ingrained compulsion to put others before myself. Somewhere along the line I confused generosity with self-sacrifice, equated my own self-worth with what I was able to give, set in my body the belief that another person’s needs were more important than my own and in order to receive love, I had to override my own needs and energy. ⠀ ⠀ And I Am Done. ⠀ ⠀ “I don’t owe anyone anything” is a phrase that has come to me over the years and every time I’ve qualified it with, “Well, but I owe respect,” and “I owe basic human compassion.” I have always justified a reason why “I owe,” skillfully tucking it in between my ethics. And to be clear owing is different than taking responsibility for. ⠀ ⠀ But during this bleed, there are no more qualifiers. This message is speaking so loudly from my bones: “I don’t owe anyone anything.” Anything.⠀ ⠀ And neither do you. ⠀ ⠀ We are so socialized to give, to owe something of ourselves. It is not selfish to preserve our health and wellbeing. It is not selfish to take time to rest. It is not selfish to care for ourselves. It is self-respect. ⠀ ⠀ Babe, you don’t owe anyone anything. You don’t owe me anything. You are worthy of respect. You are worthy of your own time. You are worthy of your own love. You are worthy without any need to “earn it.” You are worthy.

Did you ever wonder if something about your period is normal because you never heard any information of what should be normal? I remember being so confused about dull pains and rippling moodiness, because I never heard anything outside of hushed whispers hidden behind palms, first moon goddess metaphors and impending “Aunt Flo” visits. Whenever I would bring it up with my straightened side-bangs , Claire’s choker middle school friends, their faces would turn beet-red and they would say, “you’re so disgusting!” as if they didn’t have pastel pink plastic wrapped regular pads shoved into the stationery pocket of their Jansport backpacks. ‍♀️ ✨ It made me so mad that it was heavily implied by my seventh-grade giant bodybuilder gym teacher that if we have our periods we should pretend to have a cough or cold and “rest in the nurses office”. It made me furious that I felt like I couldn’t share the fact that I was having period pain with my dad, the person I told everything else to, from my secret dream job (bookbinder), to my not-so-secret crush on the boy on my bus who reminded me of Harry Potter. ✨ At one point towards the end of middle school, I just said fork it! and haven’t policed myself about my period ever since. Last year at a job interview for Director of Marketing at a woman-run company I openly said I was in a lot of pain because of cramps and to excuse me if I seem a bit off, and guess what, got an enthusiastic offer right after I left the office. (Didn’t take the job, but enjoyed the ego boost). In conclusion, uterus people! Don’t be afraid to speak up! Don’t hide your pain, your discomfort, the beauty of your body’s strength and preparation to create life. The more we speak up, the less afraid future girls will be when one day in the bathroom it will look like that blood flood scene for the first time. I don’t want another girl being slut-shamed for being the first person in school to use a tampon. *definitely wishing I could transfer my menstrual cramps to politicians who do not support or understand reproductive health)✨

Georgia is putting aside some $1.5 million of its $27.5 billion state 2020 budget in order to make sure that low-income women and girls will have access to free menstrual pads and tampons. . According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the portion of the 2020 budget, which begins July 1, will go to schools and community centers in low-income areas in Georgia. . House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones helped negotiate the budget to include the money after earlier opposing bill that would have removed the state’s 4% tax on menstrual products. . Jones argued that budgeting for the $1 million that would be given to the Georgia Department of Education more directly addresses the needs of young girls who sometimes miss out on school because their families can’t afford the products, the AJC notes. . Another $500,000 will be given to state’s county health departments, which will provide menstrual products to low income women. . It is worth noting, however, that the $1.5 million allocated for the feminine care products is currently only a one-time thing that is not guaranteed in future budgets.
