Walking around the Vegas AGTA show and it was great see the @arkenstone_minerals with beautiful cases of some amazing minerals. This ‘devine’ aquamarine from them is stunning from the Shigar valley, Pakistan. As we know aquamarine is well known from here as producing some of the most spectacular specimens of the species and this one true to form - there is a lot of growth going on here! The two crystals growing together in this “cross” shape, good colour and as with many large crystals full of inclusions like ‘rain’ - parallel fine channels that are in fact growth tubes (negative channels) containing liquid, gas and crystallites, and as I have mentioned before, familiar ‘wispy veils’ - murky cloud like inclusions. However, on this also some great growth patterning almost like ‘herringbone’ on the larger flattened crystal picked up by the reflected light. The main thinner upright crystal has a fabulous termination and is partly inter grown with the other which appears thicker on one side and almost tabular in form. As I turn and look down the length of the crystal, such great colour and optical clarity! Throw in a little dusting of black tourmaline ‘schorl’ as well. In a ‘sea of gemstones’ and articles made from them at the show, nice to see this pristine ‘natures gem’ kept as is . Something different! This is a cracking specimen of Brookite (TiO₂) from Balochistan, Pakistan. These recent finds in my opinion have matched the classic “Alpine” brookites from Switzerland/Italy and Russia, and dare I say the classic from Wales (read below!). First though, just look at this gorgeous large orange-red thin platy crystal typically ‘sword shaped’, sharp and lustrous, sitting with smaller ‘friends’ investing crystalline quartz on matrix. Such great quality, and clearly shown is a classic black internal ‘phantom’, often seen in this species the best being considered those that show an almost ‘hour glass’ figure. Look how thin those crystals are - they must have been very carefully collected! I think one of the reasons these appeal to me is that the actual first described occurrence of the species was by Levy in 1825 from specimens found from Prenteg in North Wales. Indeed Sowerby in his ‘British Mineralogy’ (1809) figured an incredible specimen collected near ‘Snowdon’ by Wilson Lowry and now in the British Museum collection, and later locality information showed it was collected from the ‘roadside between Beddgelert and Tremaddoc’ about 8 miles from Snowdon – no doubt the famous locality at Prenteg. These crystals were huge, over an inch in length and at the time a sensation, still now some of the finest found. As per the norm in Mineralogy, later occurrences are discovered, sometimes far exceeding the original finds, however, these great specimens all seem to remain pretty consistent, iconic and ‘similar’, all almost in competition and indicative of the best of the species. I am always astounded by the sheer variety and colours of fluorite from around the world. We all know of the most amazing pieces, showing beautiful zoning whilst often occurring in complex and beautiful crystals and assemblages. One of my favourite localities are the mines of Spain, which have produced some of the most beautiful and diverse specimens. This piece was ‘got’ from the St Marie aux Mines show soon after the discovery of a large pocket (bigger than two cars!) in May 2003 and called the “Tres de la Collada” (adit number 3 of the old mine) at the famous La Viesca mine, Asturias, Spain. It was one of those moments of ‘buy now there may be no more’! This mine has been worked for many years for fluorspar, and during periods of inactivity collectors have explored and discovered many pockets - each having its own ‘personality’ and adding to the variety and overall diversity of the fluorite found there. In daylight, this pocket produced fluorite of a more intense colour, with magenta instead of the usual grey/sky-blue so typical of the mine. One of the characteristics of this pocket where the crystals often sitting on a ‘nest’ of fine white druses of crystalline quartz. Here, the cubes are intergrown, showing a coarse stepped or polysynthetic growth and the surface has a ‘satiny sheen’ like appearance which under a loupe looks like a fine translucent ‘globular’ or ‘hummocky’ crystallisation. However, shine a light onto this and all is revealed! A beautiful deep magenta and bluish zoning giving this fantastic ethereal glow of colour! Just stunning eh!? When I first attended ‘shows’ I often saw dealers and collectors walking around with their own ‘lights’ and it has now become my own standard equipment along with a good loupe!
