I loved my little cousins and nieces (of course), but found them a bit boring till they could talk. I worried at times if I would be bored with my own babies, should the Lord bless me with any. Did my lack of baby fever mean that I wasn’t called to marriage and motherhood after all? Mom friends assured me that I would feel differently about my own child, but I was skeptical. Turns out, my mom friends were right: I not only love Joseph to pieces, I find him fascinating to observe and interact with. Watching him develop is the first time I’ve ever had the opportunity to see a human being blossom from conception, and the nerd in me absolutely loves it. Contemplating him while he sleeps has done wonders for my prayer life and the fact that I seriously think he is the most adorable little person ever has made me more deeply aware of the intensity of God’s love for me. When I let the softness of them round down the hardness of me...the sharp edge of no sleep, today’s raw nerves of nursing pain, the stumbling blocks of my surging desire to control. When I remember the pure gift of them instead, the aliveness of each one in my arms, the gentle curve of their skin not yet weathered by time’s lines, the fresh eyes of their lives not yet dulled by hurt’s bruise. This is grace’s moment: the reminder to soften and bend to love, then to rise anew and again. It is the movement of motherhood and the shape of the Christian life, from humility to hope, back again and again. I will spend the rest of my days trying to remember the simplicity of such love against the hard edges of my own nature, and it will never cease to bring me back to the loving mercy of God. #motherhood #motheringspirit
