On Sunday I found this little hoard of uncut garnets on the Thames foreshore. In the sunlight, they were glistening like juicy, red pomegranate seeds. The word 'garnet' is derived from the Latin word 'granatus' which means 'seed.' Swipe left to see some interesting jewellery made from garnets in the shape of pomegranates.

This Roman hairpin is my FAVOURITE find from the River Thames! The Museum of London has dated it to AD 43-100 when Roman Londinium was just a small outpost on the western fringe of the mighty Roman Empire. The carved bone hairpin would have been used to fix a Roman woman’s braided hair in place. Swipe left to see an illustration of a Roman hairpin in use. I found the hairpin on the river bed in front of the former location of the Roman governor’s palace along the River Thames. I can imagine an elegant Roman woman taking an evening stroll along the river in the 1st century AD when a strong gust of wind possibly dislodged the pin from her hair, sending the pin tumbling into river below... to be found by me almost 2,000 years later! It was a spine-tingling experience when I picked it up! I donated the Roman hairpin to the Museum of London where it is on permanent display in the Roman gallery. The hairpin is now featured in a new book called ‘Finds Identified’ from the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme. Swipe left to see my Roman hairpin in the book.

Flower power! ⠀ Before mains power and dry cell batteries, accumulator batteries were used to power the all important wireless radios of the 1930s to the 1950s. These hefty rechargeable units had to be taken to the local garage or bike shop to be put on charge for a cost and were swapped for a spare. This was a weekly chore (hence the carry handle), often the job of less than careful youngsters...I have read more than a few reminisce about how the splashes of sulphuric acid created holes in your clothes! ⠀ We found two complete accumulators in the river last weekend (having only seen pieces of them before) and with thanks to @mikespilligan I have gratefully accumulated them both (please swipe). ⠀ #accumulator #oldbattery #wireless #hampshire #riverfinds #oldbottles #archaeology #bottledumpfinds #mudlarking #mudlark #antique #history #treasurehunting #mudlarkingfinds #riverhunting #bottlehunting #riverfinds #bottlecollecting #wading #riverdump #thebestthingscometothosewhowade #wadingfortreasure

Two days ago I found this beautiful, vintage ring as I was mudlarking along the Thames foreshore. It’s made of sterling silver (925) and set with a stunning turquoise gemstone. Ancient Egyptians, Persians, Chinese, Aztecs and Incas of South America and Native North Americans considered turquoise gemstones to be sacred and set them in jewellery to bring power, luck, and protection. Centuries ago, turquoise was mined in Central Asia and transported to Turkey via the ancient trade routes. It was then purchased in Turkish bazaars by Venetian merchants who distributed the gemstones around Europe. Although this ring is probably from the 20th century, the ornate decoration on the silver band and vibrant turquoise stone are still extraordinarily beautiful, don’t you think!!! Swipe left for a close-up photo.

Happy St Nicholas Day! When I found this Medieval pewter token on the Thames foreshore, I mistook it for a common lead token. But when I got home, I discovered it’s a rare ‘Boy Bishop’ token which revealed an interesting backstory about a long-lost Medieval tradition. The name 'Saint Nicholas' (the real Saint, not Santa Claus) is written on this Medieval pewter token produced by the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds. Each year on the 6th of December, the Abbey would select one boy from the choir to serve as the honorary Bishop from Saint Nicholas Day (today) until Christmas Day. The boy would be given pewter tokens like this one which he distributed to the poor members of the local community. These tokens could be exchanged in shops around the Abbey for food and other essentials to make Christmas enjoyable for the underprivileged. This long tradition stopped abruptly in 1539 when the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds was destroyed by King Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the monasteries. Today in Britain, many churches give out ‘Christmas hampers’ filled with delicious goodies to local families in need.

Paw prints in a medieval tile and a moment caught in time. I can just imagine the dog trotting across the tile makers work as it lay out to dry. Happily tiles like this are not unusual finds on the foreshore. Animals wandered at will in those days, but it has been suggested the tile makers encouraged them over their work to personalise it for them.
