Today’s prompt on #myhouseandhome is GOLDEN GLOW and I’m always a bit surprised how little gold we have around the house. All the gold things we have are items gifted to us, like this awesome set of Russian dolls that arrived in one of the recent boxes of goodies from my sister...(which are usually always opened by customs as she has a habit of filling them up with rather miscellaneous items.) While gold might not be my number one choice of metal, something I feel entirely differently about is gold macramé. Can’t get enough of it and always thinking of what to dye gold next. I shared this image on a post recently when I was talking about sharing other peoples images without credit as this image was shared many times without me being credited. Afterwards I received alot of messages from people telling me stories of how their designs had been copied or used without permission which is happening every day across the board. . Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say but we have to draw a line somewhere between inspiration and imitation, and it can be a blurry line. We are all exposed to other peoples creations all the time and this can influence what we do but the key is to only focus on one aspect of the work that spoke to us and to me appropriation is at one end of the spectrum that also includes inspiration, imitation and copy. Innovation happens from imitation in many ways, as in business we see it with organisations that come up with simple tweaks to an idea or a product to make it better. . . Conscientiously or unconsciously we all get inspired by the world around us, our daily lives but also other’s and the most natural way of learning is by imitating. Every musician starts by playing other peopled music before they start making their own. Visual artists are usually seen copying master paintings and drawing famous sculptures in museum and this is totally part of the learning process. The only requirement is to be clear about it, give credit to the original author of the work and not try to sell something as yours if it was a copy of someone else’s work and that includes copying a design, a photo or an image on Instagram.
