Patience + Hustle The dirty details of growing tulips. April ‘18 - we put in an order for over 13,000 tulip bulbs (gulp). September ‘18 - all our farm income went to paying for tulip bulbs. October ‘18 - thousands of bulbs arrived at the farm in a mass of boxes. November ‘18 - All 13,000 tulips were dug, by hand (), and tucked underground awaiting Spring. 5+ months of waiting begun. Did we plant too many? How are we going to sell them? Will they grow? Unlike most people, our investment & hopes laid under a thick, rich layer of chicken compost. April ‘19 - our tulip fields burst into a sea of beautiful colours & begin to bloom by the hundreds (time to wake up the old Winter body STAT) Our worries were halted & healed by the dazzling display before us. But ... Nobody could have prepared us for the challenges we face as young farmers. The patience, dealing with uncertainty, huge financial investments, the hard work - not to mention the weight of all the shortcomings & success of the farm. But, we did it! Growing local & organic flowers with YOU cheering us on! April ‘19 - over 90% of our tulips have been harvested and placed into storage. Soon enough, the cycle will come back to its beginnings and we’ll be back to scouring catalogues and tracking down new varieties. THIS is just the beginning. Tulips, you were SO worth it!
