Nettles birthday cake for one of my very favorite people We celebrated with a wild foods feast! Nettles Pesto Pasta, Nettles and Wild Garlic Frittata, Spring Greens Soup, Wild Salad, Fiddleheads, and Toasted Day Lily Tubers. And then of course this gorgeous cake to top it all off made by my girl @seasongmama. It was amazing! And for any of you wanting to learn more about Nettles as food and medicine, I’m currently working on an ebook “for the love of nettles” that will be full of recipes (including one for a gluten-free Nettles cake) and be a bonus for anyone who joins my Patreon in the next month, bc guess what!? I’m gonna do it! Many of you have been asking for further study and more online courses and that’s just what the monthly Patreon membership will offer. I’ll be unveiling the details on how you can join any day, so stay tuned! Xoxoxo

Beautiful nettle pesto! So easy to make - nettles, good quality olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper. I blend in cheese and nuts when I open the jar if I want to - the pesto keeps much longer that way. Keeping the pesto recipe simple means I can be more free when deciding what to do with my nettles!

Today’s green juice made with fresh, wild-harvested Nettles!
Nettles are one of spring’s most enticing traditional herbs and are also delicious wild food. Found in wooded areas, fertile fields, riverbanks, and along shaded trails, we look forward to them returning each year. For herbalists, nettles are thought of as spring’s green superfood, packed with minerals and vitamins; we can hardly get enough!
Nettles are an excellent source for wildcrafting in terms of sustainability since they are a naturally spreading weed. If you have a nettle patch that you visit often or one growing in your garden, many harvests will ensure second growths, making it a viable plant all summer long.
When they are young, they are full of fresh juicy goodness just waiting to be eaten!
Adding nettles into your wellness routine and diet not only gives you essential nutrients that your body needs but they support healthy tissue states .* Some favorite ways to use them include a fresh nettle tea if you can or fresh nettle juice!

Ooh This is an excellent list. Good to have these herbal allies on hand or in your pantry. I might also include yarrow for wounds/bleeding and a few other weedy friends plus roses Contraindications could be an aster allergy (chamomile ) , perhaps hypothyroidism (lemon balm) , reflux (peppermint) and peppermint is too strong for the babes under 4 . All herbs have energetic effects so please do also observe in your own being . For example nettles is an excellent nutritive and allergy ally but can be too drying and cooling in excess. Blending herbs can help balance their properties. Please See your local herbalist/herb store if you need support Thank you @fxnutritionist for excellent post. #herbs #herbalfirstaid #vulnerary #demulcent #antiinflammatory #antispasmodic #calendula #lavender #lemonbalm #antiviral #nervines #oats #nettles #allergies #quercetin #bioflavonoids #stomachic #fennel #peppermint #ginger #raspberry #tonifying #herbalremedy #antiinfectious #herbs #herbalists #apothecary #wellness #naturalhealing #folkhealing #om
My barrel-o-nettles! (Well, Barrel # 1)
Last year I heard that an herbalism teacher in my area was urging students to harvest at nearby park Powell Butte because it was supposedly overrun with nettles and completely unsprayed. Neither could be more untrue.
A five-minute investigation online confirms that Powell Butte is sprayed. And the Friends of Powell Butte found years ago that two native butterflies had been extirpated from the park due to rampant nettles harvesting. The butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of nettle leaves and then their baby caterpillars have nutritious food to munch.
So I’m on a mission to urge everyone who can to grow their own nettles! It’s easy squeezy. Keep them in a container to prevent overwhelm.

#Nettles (Urtica dioica) leaf is one of those herbs I find works best if extracted fresh, right after harvesting. I have a nice big patch in one of my gardens, that is thriving under and around the blackberries.
I prefer a multi-fractional extraction process that includes soaking the fresh leaves in vinegar (ACV) and water for about 24 hours, then decocting I'm glycerin and water on a simmer for about 4 hours, then washing (via percolation) with 95% alcohol.
This gives me a very micronutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory, final extract that is also an oxymel with a yummy sweet/sour taste that has a shelf life of years. Plus I can get a LOT of final product that is clinically very potent from a relatively small amount of plant material.
I use leaf and stem of small stems, but strip leaves off of larger/older stems and compost the stems (they also make incredible cordage). #herbs #nettlesforhealth #medicinemaking #medicineinmygarden #medicinalplants #antiinflammatories #austeremedicine #wildmedicine #foraging #wildnutrition #thehumanpath #herbalmedics
