DIY bug spray
.
.
The perfect alternative if your looking for a natural way to keep the bugs away. Unfortunately, most store bought bug repellents contain very harsh, harmful ingredients that are not good for us or the environment. We have been using this spray for a few months now and absolutely love it!
.
This bug spray recipe is from the lovely @chelseahennard and if you haven’t already done so, go give her a follow. Not only does she have a gorgeous and inspiring feed, she is one of the kindest souls I have met on IG. Thanks again for this amazing recipe Chelsea!

Infused vinegars
.
.
For those of you who are new here, I often mention infused vinegars and you may be wondering what the heck I’m talking about. It’s basically just plain white vinegar that has been naturally infused with thing like citrus rinds or herbs. We use it in cleaning recipes and it’s a great way to use up food scraps. It’s also perfect for those who don’t have any essential oils on hand or prefer not to use them. If you check our highlights section under “infused vinegars” you will find a little tutorial on how to make them, or you can check out the recipes below. Happy cleaning!
.
Lemon infused vinegar: Fill a jar with lemon peels, about half way or full if you prefer it stronger, then top with white vinegar and let it sit in the pantry for up to two weeks. Strain peels and it’s ready to use
.
Orange infused vinegar: Repeat the same steps as lemon vinegar. (You can do this with any citrus fruit and grapefruit also smells amazing)
.
Lavender infused vinegar: mix 1/4 cup lavender to 1 cup white vinegar in a jar and allow it to sit in the window or counter for 7-10 days. Strain lavender and it’s ready to use. (Use ACV to make a lavender hair rinse)
.
Rosemary lemon vinegar: add 10-15 sprigs of rosemary and the peels from two whole lemons in a jar and fill the rest with white vinegar. Allow to sit up to 2 weeks in a pantry. Strain rosemary and peels and it’s ready to use. Sometimes I add a few springs on fresh rosemary to the final product too
.
(Edit: Just a friendly reminder, vinegar is not to be used on mineral surfaces like granite and marble. Please see post before this, for a recipe suitable for those)

Cleaning tools ✨
.
.
When it comes to lowering our waste and cleaning with natural ingredients , it only makes sense to use natural cleaning tools too, right? (Actually, what makes the most sense is to use up whatever cleaning brushes and tools you currently have, until they need to be replaced) Butttt, when it does come time to replace them, a great alternative to synthetic, plastic dish brushes and sponges are natural options like coconut fibres, luffa, cellulose or wood brushes with compostable heads. These options are great because they are made from natural materials that can be either recycled in some way, or composted and returned back to our earth. Most importantly though, it reduces the need for more disposable plastic to be produced. They are also extremely durable and as a bonus, they look pretty darn good!

✨An easy alternative to paper towels and disinfectant wipes
.
.
When we first made the switch, I wondered how it was even possible to survive without paper towels, but now it doesn’t even phase me. We made napkins from flour sacks and bought a package of cellulose sponges, thrifted a bunch of random fabrics and napkin and now we have a huge set of napkins and reusable paper towels that we use instead of paper towel. We use them just like we would any paper towels, but instead of throwing them in the garbage, we throw them in a wet bag. We keep a wet bag in the kitchen (just a mesh bag) and throw the dirty ones in, a give them a wash when the bag is full. Easy peasy!
.
.
DISINFECTANT WIPES :
•1 cup distilled water
•1/4 cup vinegar
•8 drop tea tree essential oil
•8 drops eucalyptus
•8 drops lemon oil
•30 squares or cloth (we used our flour sack napkins and cut them in half into squares and they worked very well)
•Mix solution together then allow for your squares to soak up all of the solution and use for up to a week or so
.
The wet wipes are to be used for surfaces, *Not* for your skin. They are super useful if you are used to using disinfectant wipes in your home, or you’re just making the transition. (And again, if you don’t agree with using essential oils or their cleaning powers this recipe may not be for you) Simply wetting a cellulose cloth with some castile soap works wonders as well! It’s all about OPTIONS and finding what works for you or your family!
.
So now we’re curious, have you tried paperless paper towels in your home or see yourself using them? If so, how are you liking them?

We have saved a ton of money AND plastic by making our own cleaners. It also makes us feel better that we can clean our home without the toxins and mystery chemicals. I (Rachael) also enjoy making my infused vinegars and love DIY’s, so it’s become less of a chore (I’ll be sharing that again this week for those who are new here). Anyways, here are some of our favorite cleaning recipes that we love use all the time!
.
.
ALL PURPOSE CLEANER
•Equal parts distilled water
•Equal parts vinegar
•A few drops of essential oils or substitute infused vinegar instead of plain vinegar above
We use this all purpose cleaner for the tubs, sinks, showers, tiles, washing machine, hard surfaces, wiping down the stove, cleaning the microwave and so much more. Basically anything *except* for marble, granite and other mineral surfaces
.
GRANITE CLEANER
•2 Tbsp castile soap
•1/4 cup vodka
•1 cup distilled water
•10-20 drops essential oil
This is safe to use on mineral surfaces like granite and marble. I know some people also use this as a disinfectant spray!
.
WINDOW CLEANER
* Equal parts distilled water
* Equal parts vinegar
* Newspaper (optional, to use as cloth)
To get a streak free shine, simple vinegar and distilled water works best. For a sparkling shine, repurpose some newspaper to use as your cloth. I don’t know why, but it works wonders. We rinse it off then throw it in the compost after use
.
FLOOR CLEANER
•1/4 cup of castile soap
•2 gallons of warm water
Mix together and wash floors as normal
.
We will share a few more this week, but this post is already too long (this always seems to happen). And just remember, we are simply sharing what works for us in our life. If you don’t agree with using vinegar or castile soap to clean, these recipes may not be for you. But otherwise stick around for some more DIY’s coming this week and have a happy Tuesday!

A small space can still create a lot of waste, and unfortunately the bathroom is one of those areas. Over the last year we have been able to reduce our waste by making a few simple switches and swaps. Choosing reusables instead of disposables, DIY’s, and opting for refills(when available), are just some of the things we try to do. It’s taken a long time to get this point, and by no means are we perfect (or even close). Plastic is not 100% avoidable and we accept that and simply try our best based on our circumstances
.
So having said that, this picture may look pretty, but the reality is that we’ve saved, washed, thrifted, reused, refilled and cleaned a lot of the items we use with the exception of a few new items and gifts. Using up what you currently have is one of the most important things when it comes to reducing your waste. It’s tempting to want to start fresh, but we promise you, the reward is so much better when you finally finish your products and get to swap them!
.
Even more importantly though, do what you can under YOUR own circumstances. Everyone has different needs/wants and accessibility to things and you should never feel bad about your progress. Wherever you are on your journey, or whatever it may look like, be proud of what you have accomplished by choosing to live with less waste
.
Some of our current bathroom favs:
•Refillable shampoo + conditioner
•DIY makeup remover (Scott also uses this as aftershave) and remover pads (gift from @pygoscelis.natural )
•Saftey Razor

.
(Sorry for the long post, but one more thing! The diy foot scrub recipe is posted in our stories today if you feel like giving it a go! It’s perfect for sandal weather and like always, it’s super simple to make)
