Farming with babies and small kids means finding creative solutions on the fly. This little lady spends a fair amount of time on my back in the ergo, but today she was happy playing in this avocado crate with empty seed packets while I got our cool season crops started in our small seed greenhouse. This is the next generation earth keeper~farmer~restorer in training, watching everything I do. Next year she will be planting too.... . . I use our avocado crates for seed starting flats since we have so many hanging around the farm. This morning we planted cabbage (red and green), onions (purple and white), beets, rainbow chard and tomatillos. Thanks government for the free plant material! These are all apple scion for grafting. The USDA freely distributes germplasm for educational, research, and breeding purposes. They have an incredible collection. This is one of my favorite government programs and I was amazed to find out it exists. It gives a hint of what is possible for our future ecotopia . I didn't think I was going to get my order because the program was suspended due to the government shutdown, so I was delighted when this arrived today. This order includes red fleshed apples, disease resistant varieties, and obscure cultivars like 'Longfield', which is my last name, so I wonder if one of my ancestors named it. I love collecting plants. I feel like it is so important for creating a just, regenerative, and ecological future.

Chips are flying! Throwback to the old days, early April 2014. Morgan milling the first of the logs with the chainsaw mill. That thing drinks up a lot of gas and bar oil. Far more than the sawmill for less work. That saw also takes a lot of time to sharpen. It made all the lumber for our original cabin. The log pictured is currently one of the square dovetailed logs on the original cabin sides. Anybody else run these things? Have a favorite saw? We run all Stihls: 088, 0360, 0270, and 180.
