10 year aged dancong oolong • This is another tea I enjoyed with @hot_leaf_water recently. • A heavier roast from 2009. I’m not sure what varietal this one is. • Dancong is one of my absolute favorite types of tea. They’re well known for their intoxicating aroma, sweetness and often-fruity taste. Additionally, dancong is famous for the legendary astringency and lasting flavor experienced when brewed to traditional strength. • With a heavy roast, I think it’s best to wait 1-2 years before enjoying. But, In my experience 3-5 years is the sweet spot for resting heavy roast dancong. • This was by far the oldest dancong I’ve tasted. The tea was sweet and punchy, with a great plummy and orchid aroma. The roast was still surprisingly prominent in the flavor of the first two infusions, but not past that point. • Overall this tea lasted for many infusions. I lost count, but definitely 10-12+ steeps in total from 8g leaf. • One unique thing I noticed in this tea was an interesting tint to the liquor color - the usual deep orange/gold of heavy roast dancong was influenced by an almost grey/purple color. Not sure I captured it well in these photos, it was most noticeable in my glass gongdaobei. • The last time I remember seeing this sort of coloration in the liquor was when drinking some 2016 purple leaf sheng puerh from Nannnuo shan. I’ve been in Taiwan a week now and am finally starting to get some work finished ready to be fired. I’ve only done about half of what I would in a normal working week!
