Unfortunately, my thesaurus failed me, but whatever that word may be — if it even exists — represents how I feel about SORCERY OF THORNS. . . Between the library setting, alluring manifestation of magic, and Elisabeth’s unstoppable attitude, I devoured each sentence like a reader who’d been starving for a thousand years. I mean, the grimoires (books) were alive, people! Restrained beneath chains or locked away in a cabinet, revered and respected while also feared. Perhaps a metaphor for knowledge, and one done exquisitely well. When an act of sabotage forced Elisabeth on a path she adamantly opposed, she learned that life was more volatile and complicated than she ever could’ve imagined. Nathaniel‘s wry delivery and sense of humor added levity to devastating moments, and another particular character stole the show with his wicked ways. Also, I was straight-up WEEPING by the end, trapped in a glass case of emotions where I presently still reside. YAY FOR PRIDE MONTH!! Yes, in all caps because while some may think LGBTQ+ equality is already a thing (and say stupid shit like “well what about straight pride” ) it certainly is not. Discrimination, homophobia, and threats of violence still run rampant *everywhere* which reinforces the importance of Pride Month. While there have been legal and social strides in North America (albeit ones that are under constant attack) there are still over 70 countries around the world where homosexual relationships are illegal, and 13 where it’s considered a criminal offense punishable by DEATH. . . Life sure isn’t rainbows and butterflies for those who fear for their lives, careers, and safety because of who they love, so for the month of June, it’s ALL ABOUT rainbows and happiness and freedom and perhaps assless chaps. Celebrating publicly and proudly also shows a sense of community and support for those struggling with feelings of isolation.
