Goodbye Finland! My 2 weeks of swimming and photographing Finnish ice swimmers is over. One of my main goals was to swim under the aurora, but sadly things didn’t go as planned. The forecast for auroras these 2 last nights was pretty good, but nature had other plans. I really wanted to get a shot of swimming under the aurora, but this was all I could get, a small hint of green on the horizon. But it’s better than nothing. I set the camera on a tripod and right as the lights appeared, I quickly got in the water. That night the temperature was -15C. I got in and out the water 5 times. My swim shorts froze while I was still wearing them, my beard froze and my swimming socks as well. I have never been that cold in my life, but it was all worth it. . In these temperatures getting in the water is the last thing you’d want to do, but that’s exactly what the people I photographed do every day. Some do it even when the temperature drop down to -30C. For some it’s to stay healthy and for the adrenaline rush of it and some do it to find peace of mind. Whatever the reasons you can always find a group of people who will get in that ice hole, no matter what the conditions are. . I’ll soon be publishing the whole story and photos from this trip.
