Alaska is a place where dreams come true • • The first time I came to Alaska years ago, I saw beluga whales playing in the bay. Ever since then whales have been my favorite animal. Every body of water I drive by (yes, even lakes ) I watch closely just hoping in my heart to see a whale peek out of the water to say hello. I had high expectations going back to Alaska, just hoping with everything in me that I would see orcas. I kept my eyes peeled and even hung out on the deck of the boat where it was snowing and raining freezing hail to try to see a whale. We took the boat from glacier to glacier with no luck. My heart decided to let go of the expectations so I wouldn’t be disappointed, and that’s when I heard the captain yell over the intercom, “we have an orca sighting on the starboard side!” • • I grabbed my camera and ran like a giddy child outside to get a better view. Shaking and crying (it’s an emotional experience okay, don’t @ me) I took as many photos as I could before I decided to just watch. In the words of Walter Mitty “if I like a moment, I don’t like to have the distraction of the camera.” Thankfully I snapped these photos before that feeling set in and thankfully my sister recorded a video of it from inside the boat and sent it to me. • • The crew told us that in all the years they have been doing these glacier tours, they have only seen breaching orcas three times. Thank you, @26glaciers, for a trip I will never forget.
