A venerable if maverick Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn was a student of the living Force. Qui-Gon lived for the moment, espousing a philosophy of "feel, don't think -- use your instincts." On Tatooine, Qui-Gon discovered a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker who was strong in the Force. Sensing the boy's potential, Qui-Gon liberated Anakin from slavery. Two friendships that transcended the role of Master and Padawan. Qui-Gon was able to foresee the potential in others from the outset. He realised Obi-Wan’s compassion and devotion from a young age and this is why he entrusted him to train Anakin. And beyond his belief that Anakin was The Chosen One, Qui-Gon was able to recognise the selflessness and courage embedded in Anakin as a child, and saw his willingness to help people despite his own circumstances as a slave. Qui-Gon’s impression upon Obi-Wan and Anakin guided their own friendship which is one of the strongest in the entire Star Wars saga. The compassion and kindness of Obi-Wan, and the selflessness and devotion of Anakin, tied them together as one.

Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray: I was absolutely captivated by this book. It aligns action with philosophy so superbly, I was truly taken to a galaxy far far away. I found that I was learning things about myself purely through Qui-Gon’s own journey of self-discovery. He ventures into the ancient prophecies and discovers that the true key to knowledge is to both interpret and misinterpret something, in order to fully understand it. Through these discoveries, Gray cleverly hints at the many events that have played out through the Skywalker saga. She particularly hints at Anakin’s path of the Chosen One; yes there is a prophecy that entails one being that will bring balance to the Force, but that prophecy never said how it was that the Chosen One would bring balance. Thus, the prophecy is left for pure interpretation. After Anakin falls to the dark side and is then eventually redeemed, that same prophecy is realised to be misinterpreted. No Jedi or Sith knew how Anakin would fulfill this prophecy, there was no guideline. Qui-Gon’s level of wisdom allowed him to purely be guided by the Force, his interest in the prophecies wasn’t because he sought to control the future, “knowing the future meant surrendering to fate. Surrendering to the ebb and flow of life. Only through that surrender could the Force be truly known.”
