Spring is a great time to walk through the vineyards to look at the old gnarly vines. According to current records, this Rkatsiteli vine was planted in 1983 but visual clues will tell you it's much older than 36 years. She's been through a lot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For the past 7 months, we have been working on cataloging the age of all our vineyards. It's no easy or quick task. Let's remember in the 50s, 60s, and 70s there were no computers. Amber wines, part 2 -- This one is not for the faint of heart! Pheasant's Tears is a Georgian winery focused on preserving the traditional winemaking technique of using qvevri (amphora). . . . . . The Caucasus is considered by many to be the birthplace of wine, dating to 8,000 B.C. However, in the 20th century, ancient practices started to die out in favor of modern winemaking techniques. Pheasant's Tears is now one of the wineries leading the charge in Georgia to keep these practices alive. This Rkatsiteli was aged in beeswax-lined qvevri for 6 months. Its distinctive orange color comes from a very gradual oxidation. . . . . . In terms of aromatics, qvevri-aged Rkatsiteli is not for the faint of heart! It's different from any wine I've ever had before. I recommend tasting it over a few days, as the wine definitely evolves with air exposure. Funky, raw, wild floral aromatics are unleashed upon opening, which evolve into a honeyed and creamy wine over days. Trust me, you probably won't want to have more than a glass at a time anyway. This is not a wine to chug. It's complex, nuanced, and thoughtful. Citrus, bitter walnut, musky dried apricot, and saline minerality on the palate are met with with a yogurt-like tartness of acidity and textured tannins. Unexpected note of overripe honeydew on the finish. I'm finding qvevri wine to be quite fascinating -- stay tuned for more as I continue to procure!

Det flyder jo snart på hvert et gadehjørne, enhver kiosk med respekt har mindst 4-5 forskellige brands på hylden... er det, det vi vil? #orimarani #excileoncaucasus #2018 90/10 #rkatsiteli og #mstvane Snuden byder på endnu lidt omtumlet vin, flasket inden for de sidste par måneder, fløjet til DK og nu altså sniffet/drukket. Nå, men vi har en del hvede, især korn, en smule røg som fra whiskey, men uden alkoholen. Moden tropisk mango er der også plads til og som der kommer mere luft til også tørt græs og en del hø. Smagen er sund og rund, ikke fed og flommet, men med blød funky frugt og let afbrændt sommer-græsplæne. RKATZ an ancient grape variety from Georgia, this Rkatsiteli was crafted with no additions, fermented by ambient yeasts, macerated with skins for 10 Days and then aged in clay Amphora for 9 months. . ‍♀️My Notes: This is a refined and elegant “orange wine” pouring a soft golden hue. Flavors of ripe yellow apple and green pear, a soft and subtle doughy aroma lingers on the nose. Very delicate tannins come through on the finish. . Notes from the winery: “The Effect of an Amphora on Rkatsiteli is similar to a wine barrel, amphoras cause micro-oxygenation, which concentrates the wine. And since an amphora is shaped like an oval, it keeps the wine and lees constantly moving and in suspension. An amphora is usually toasted inside 3-4 times, which creates a layer like beeswax. This beeswax-like layer adds additional protection to the wine ensuring that the wine does not seep through the porous clay of the amphora. Unlike a wine barrel, an amphora does not actually impart any flavors to the wine. What an amphora does provide, however, is roundness, mouthfeel and concentration. An amphora softens the flavors of Rkatsiteli as well as its tannins. In summation, most of the flavors in the wine come from the grape itself, but an amphora adds to the flavors’ concentration and complexity.”

Yesterday we had the opportunity to do a side-by-side comparison of @drfrankwine‘s #Rkatsiteli Amber (or skin contact, orange wine) and their standard white made with the same grape. This grape originates from Georgia , and this Sauvignon Blanc-esque variety does exceedingly well in New York’s cool climate #FingerLakes region. Have you had it before?
