In honor of this week's In Defense of Plants Podcast about monkeyflowers (feat. @naomibot) I present to you the first western monkeyflower I ever met - Erythranthe guttata. This is an adaptable and wide-spread species of monkeyflower that can grow in a variety of conditions, including some that would be too severe for most other plants. This particular plant was growing on the bank of a a hot spring in Yellowstone. I wonder if the year-round warmth allows these plants to grow throughout the harsh Wyoming winter?

What are your big plans for the May Long Weekend? I’ll probably be working in my garden no big adventures here. This was taken on a gorgeous day a few weeks ago up at Lake Annette in Jasper National Park. Can’t wait to bring the van out to Jasper for some fun trips this summer. Praying for no forest fires, but in our last few trips we’ve observed that jasper is RIPE for a huge fire. Lots of red & dead trees. Blame it on the pine beetles.
