Iron point to stimuli and lilia found in Alesia (nowadays Alise-Sainte-Reine, France), used by the Romans in their auto-siege. The modern name "caltrop" is derived from the Latin calcitrapa (foot-trap). Historically, caltrops were part of defences that served to slow the advance of troops on foot, horses, war elephants, and camels. The picture is taken from the reproductions of CONNOLLY, Peter: Greece and Rome at War.

On The Frontier - The Fortress Of Mobene ➖ The remains of the Roman fortress of Mobene (Below) and an illustration on how it looked when it was fully intact (Above). Mobene was one of the many small but sturdy fortresses on the Limes Arabicus, Rome's desert frontier to the south, used to protect the province of Arabia from nomad raids and monitor the frontier. Also significantly however, Mobene is the most preserved Roman fort in the Middle East, and its good condition gives us a excellent insight on Roman forts. Mobene is situated in a wide, stony plain with easy access into the countryside, allowing for easy monitoring of movement. --- Although agriculture is not possible within Mobene itself, there are fields nearby that the Romans used to supply the fortress regularly, ensuring it could be maintained relatively easily. The garrison within the fort was small, perhaps just around 100 or so men. Since this isn't large enough to house a full strength unit of any kind, its likely a detachment from a nearby one served there. The fort seems to have been built between 293-305 AD, during the reign of the emperors of the Tetrarchy, as an inscription in the fort suggests. The Romans used Mobene throughout the 4th century AD, and beyond. --- The walls are 6 M tall, connecting four stone towers 11-12 M tall, while the fort's central gate is flanked by two more towers that were smaller than the normal ones at the corners. The fort's courtyard has two cisterns, and twenty three rooms that have been identified as stables, so the place possibly housed a cavalry or infantry-cavalry unit. The Sassanid Persians captured it in the early 7th century AD, but lost it again some years later when the Romans counterattacked into the area. Mobene fell again in the century to the Muslims when they invaded a weakened Rome, and was never reclaimed. The fort however remained in active use well into the age of the Ummayyad Caliphate. --- #Rome #Roma #Roman #RomanArmy #RomanLegion #RomanEmpire #SPQR #Mobene #Fort #MiddleEast #History #RomanHistory #MilitaryHistory #AncientHistory

The Battle Of Augustodunum, 21 AD ➖ "The Gallic townsmen lacked disclipine and battle experience [This was during a revolt in Gaul]; their eyes and ears were no use to them. The Romans' confidence made exhortations unnecessary. However, Silius [The Roman commander] spoke. It was an affront to the conquerors of Germany, he suggested, to have to march against Gauls - a single Cohort had recently suppressed the rebel Turoni, a single cavalry regiment the Treviri, a few troops from this very army the Sequani. 'The wealthy, luxurious Aedui look unwarlike enough.' He said. 'You prove that they are what they look! And then when they run, you can spare their lives.' There was a mighty shout in reply. Our cavalry enveloped the enemy's flanks, while the infantry made a frontal attack. The Gallic flanks were driven in. The iron-clad contingent caused some delay as their casing resisted javelins and swords. However, the Romans used axes and mattocks, and struck at their plating and its wearers like men demolishing a wall. Others knocked down the immobile Gladiators with poles and pitchforks, and, lacking the power to rise, they were left for dead. Sacrovir [The Gallic commander] and his closest associates fled first to Augustodunum and then, fearing betrayal, to a house nearby. There he killed himself; and his companions killed each other. The house was set on fire, and the bodies burnt inside it." ~ Tacitus, 3.43 --- #Rome #Roma #RomanArmy #RomanLegion #RomanEmpire #SPQR #History #RomanHistory #AncientHistory #MilitaryHistory
