Experiments by @vulkanwoodworking⠀
"At last we have the results of the different finishes on epoxy! Let me start by saying there is no right or wrong answer to this, it will simply come down to preference and the effect you are going for. This was simply an experiment for me and I thought I would share with you all! I wanted to sand everything to the same grit (800) and use different finishes and see what happens. I know Rubio shouldn't sand past 150 so that coaster will be different. I know I can go higher with Odies as it can be polished to a shine but I wanted to see the comparison at the same grit.
Hopefully this will be a nice reference. ⠀
1. @walrusoil produced a great finish. Slightly matted with a satin sheen. ⠀
2. @odiesoil was pretty similar. A great finish that was slightly matted with a satin sheen. ⠀
3. @rubiomonocoatusa produced a very durable finish. It really made the wood and epoxy look great. Rubio produced the most matted finish of the four.⠀
4. @rustoleum produced the most glossy finish of the four. It really makes the epoxy shine. A little more work was required with the spray poly with multiple coats and sanding in between. ⠀
⠀
My Conclusion: if you want a great matte finish go with Rubio monocoat, you cant go wrong. If you want gloss go with polyurethane. I only used a spray can and got great results, I imagine using a spray gun and compressor would get you a great glossy finish like glass. For anything in between gloss and matte go with odies or walrus oil. You honestly cant go wrong with any of them. They all produce a great finish on epoxy. I hope you enjoyed this experiment.
