Repost @gkwhiting ・・・ Today’s Workout 1️⃣ ✅ It’s so weird to think that I am on my last couple of rides with #LolaTheFelt and that this weekend we will part ways. Some people would say that a bike is just a thing, but we triathletes and cyclists can tell you that a bicycle is so much more...it’s a feeling you get when you look at it...a rush when you know you get to ride...a feeling almost of camaraderie because it (she) has been to hell and back with you, and has seen you at your absolute best and complete worst. It’s a relationship, a partnership, and you have to respect it. I love this bike. Two of my best friends are in my life because of her, and I’m so grateful (and excited) that one of those friends is the one taking her home this weekend. I know she will be loved and will have some amazing new adventures. As for me? My ever changing (and cranky) body has decided it’s time for a bike with a few more points of adjustability and customization, so it’s just about time for New Bike Day. It is a poison that kills the love I have for myself.” ~ Aabye-Gayle Francis-Favilla •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• I recently read this amazing post from the above author, and it resonated with me. Social media has been amazing to bring people together across the world, and it’s been inspiring to watch other athletes train, push themselves and achieve their goals. But what happens when all you do is compare yourself to others? Whether it’s number of followers, how fast they ran that mile, what their suffer score is - you name it, we can compare it in this day and age. Theodore Roosevelt said “comparison is the thief of joy”; Aabye-Gayle added “and jealousy is often its partner in crime.” We (and by we, I mostly mean ME) have to learn to stop comparing our cutting room floor footage with others’ highlight reels. For me, all it does is drive my anxiety higher and push me into a negative space instead of a place where I can grow in my training and actually focus on my goals. Instead of enjoying my “easy z2” run, it turned into a barrage of thoughts that others are running faster, longer, and that I won’t be successful unless I am doing the same. So as of today, (after another side-of-the-trail breakdown) I decided no more. I’m taking a timeout from Strava and Garmin Connect. I need to not give a shit if I’m “trending faster” or slower. I need to just RUN. I’ll still be here, but I have to turn off the endless stream of data for now. As for the rest of today’s run, once I stopped caring about everyone/everything else, turned up my music and got lost in the beauty of the American River, everything slipped back in to place. Capped off a brilliant weekend with my first 50 mile ride. Cycling is such a meditative, restful way for me to clear my head and create the energy I want to manifest for the week ahead. I try to always do my long rides on a Sunday for this reason. On my ride today, I couldn't stop repeating song lyrics from a song I listened to quite a bit last week- "I am a miracle made up of particles, and in this existence I'll stay persistent and I'll make a difference and I will have lived it."
