Introducing Justice Jones... I’m very excited because my first children’s book is published today. Kaffee und Kuchen is a huge part of life at the Chalet School, as key a part of life as mountain walks (often involving incidents or accidents), a difficult girl being redeemed due to the wonder of the chalet school, and the message that the highest honour for a chalet school girl was to marry a doctor and live near the school forever. This is just a selection of the series which was written between 1925 to 1970 and is made up of about 60 books and several locations. The School was originally founded in the Austrian Tyrol but due to the start of World War Two they moved to Guernsey, then Herefordshire a brief stop in a island off Wales and finally Switzerland. The books set during the war, particularly the one when they have to leave Austria (Chalet School in Exile) have moments which are genuinely frightening and there is real suffering, loss and trauma. The early Austrian ones are my favourite when the school is still small, Joey hasn’t become an all wise matriarch and you see traditions like the idea of speaking French, Germans and English on alternate days being formed. Obviously these books are very of their time but sometimes it’s nice to indulge in pure escapism and return to the Austrian Tyrol accompanied perhaps by some coffee and walnut tray bake and the requisite cup of milky coffee and remember all my daydreams about being a Chalet School Girl. #Chaletschool #kaffeeundkuchen #coffeecake #booksandcake #nostalgia #chaletschoolbooks

Have you ever written to a favourite author? As a young girl, I absolutely adored the 'Melling' school stories by Margaret Biggs, and even though the books had long been out of print, I managed to track down the author's UK address and wrote her a letter all the way from New York (where I was living at the time). Margaret Biggs was kind enough to reply to me (I think she was amazed and delighted to realise she was still being read by young fans!), and we exchanged a few letters and Christmas cards, which I've kept and still treasure. I loved the characters in her school stories, as they were so very human, and I always wanted to be a little more like Helen, who was never anxious about anything and never failed to see the silver lining to any cloud.
