Introverts often get branded as uninteresting/boring. There have been so many times in my life when I’ve been called “dull” by mean girls in school (and long after school), failed dates, or extended family. It’s assumed that if I’m not saying much, it’s because I don’t have much to say/much to think about. Most of the time, though, I’m drawn to introverted people because of their thoughtfulness (generalising here of course, but I’ve often found it to be true). Because of the ways they watch and analyse and learn. Because they care about language and the value of choosing our words carefully, and have the humility to accept fault. Because their awkwardness, particularly in social situations, makes me feel less alone in my awkwardness. And sure, sometimes putting two or more introverts in a room together means a lot of silence/contemplation/further awkwardness, but even in these situations I feel a certain ease. All this is to say, try not to feel ashamed of your introversion. Chances are it contributes to your capacity for empathy, self-awareness, sensitivity, and quiet pursuits of joy. It also makes it particularly special when someone cares enough to get to know you, and keep getting to know you, until you are no longer introverted in their company.
