Our perception of “fat” as a bad word reflects our societal fatphobia. • “Fat” is not an insult. It is not an accusation. It is not a judgment of someone’s worthiness or character. Take it in: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (1) DIETS DON'T WORK. We know this. Decades of research studies show this, yet still scientists and medical professionals cannot let themselves see the truth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (2) FATNESS ISN'T A DISEASE. Being fat does not inherently bring on disease. And just as importantly, making someone "non-fat" through temporary means (dieting) doesn't prevent disease. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I always recommend reading the books Body Respect (Bacon and Aphramor) and Body of Truth (Brown) as primers on these subjects. Our actions don’t exist in a vacuum and it’s important to consider the impact of our words on the people around us. Sure, thin people experience hurt, pain, and trauma around their bodies but they don’t have the added outside oppression to contend with too.
