Vanmorgen hadden we onze eerste afspraak bij het revalidatiecentrum. Waarvoor of -van moet Caiden revalideren dan, hoor ik je wellicht denken? Er zijn daar net iets meer gespecialiseerde artsen die mee kunnen kijken met Caidens ontwikkeling, maar in het bijzonder gingen we daar nu heen (na een behoorlijke wachttijd helaas) voor zijn voetjes. Hij loopt namelijk al sinds hij kan lopen met z'n voetjes naar binnen, en dit wordt niet beter (eerder wat slechter). De kinderarts sprak zijn zorgen uit dat dit het begin kon zijn van spasticiteit, iets wat bij microcefalie kan horen. Wat betreft zijn ontwikkeling zijn we natuurlijk ongelooflijk trots dat hij al zover gekomen is. De verwachtingen waren immers een stuk slechter... Toch zijn er best wel veel motorische skills (of wellicht cognitieve skills) die hij niet onder de knie heeft, of misschien ook gewoon nog niet begrijpt (of nooit zal gaan ontwikkelen). We kunnen nooit heel duidelijk uitleggen wat we daarmee bedoelen, maar Caiden beweegt zich gewoon wat anders en minder soepel/natuurlijk als andere kindjes, die zelfs veel jonger dan hem zijn. En eindelijk waren er artsen die ons daarin compleet begrepen en dat erkenden. In september krijgen we daarom een uitgebreid onderzoek (fysio, logopedie, ergotherapeut, psycholoog en revalidatiearts) waar we een soort huidige ontwikkelingsleeftijd uit zullen krijgen. Niet omdat dat iets verandert of we per se een etiket op hem willen plakken, maar zodat we hopelijk bepaalde aanknopingspunten zullen ontdekken en aan de juiste knoppen kunnen draaien om C zo goed mogelijk te stimuleren en ondersteunen in zijn ontwikkeling. Daarnaast onwijs goed nieuws: het is waarschijnlijk (nu) geen spasticiteit. Wel krijgt hij spalkjes aangemeten voor beide beentjes/voetjes, om te proberen zijn voetjes in een wat andere stand te helpen. Hij valt nu namelijk behoorlijk vaak over zijn eigen voetjes, wat gewoon niet optimaal is. Daarnaast gaan we gewoon verder met zijn huidige fysiotherapie, gebaren, logopedie etc. ☺️ Het is een strijder en hij gaat voor goud #proudmom #lifewithmicrocephaly

Someone recently shared with me about their child who has social/emotional challenges like Campbell. She said if her daughter is feeling overwhelmed at school, she crawls under her desk for comfort. Mine has been known to do the exact same, and I always wonder what she’s feeling under there—the worst of which is fear.⁣ ⁣ But one day, this mother went on, another student got under the desk with her daughter, held her hand, and talked about dolls until she was ready to rise again.⁣ ⁣ This story brought me to tears. These tiny Kindergartener’s showing up for each other. Unreal.⁣ ⁣ I know as Campbell’s peers age they will notice more about her, and often I worry she’ll be rejected because of it. But, you guys, there’s hand-holders out there! Little humans willing to get down on the same level and love.⁣ ⁣ So new (somewhat selfish) suggestion: what if instead of praising our children for their academic and sport achievements, we did so for their acts of kindness? In my opinion that’s what breeds world changers—not straight A’s.⁣ ⁣ Are you raising a child who climbs under the desk? Either because they’re scared or supportive? PS: Campbell’s taught me you can be both. She gives as much as she gets.⁣ ⁣ These kids are incredible teachers. Oh look at Walter in his new chair With every bit of specialist equipment comes a surge of excitement and new opportunities for Walter . Not only does it allow him to do more and more , it helps him become as strong as he can be.
