Photos have emerged confirming the horrible and potentially life threatening conditions Srednyaya Bay’s 11 killer whales and 87 belugas are currently being subjected to. . Last week the “Whale Prison” underwent an inspection organised by FBS Border Service, bringing in the leading Russian experts in biology, ecology, and veterinary medicine to participate. Experts collected a significant amount of data including skin samples for genetic research, blowhole samples and water samples, as well as audio recordings of vocalisations and a vast array of photos and videos for further analysis. . The inspection revealed that "there is a complete absence of sanitation and activities aimed at preventing pathogens from infecting the animals.” The facility is reportedly covered in thick, dense ice, posing a huge threat to the animals as they could potentially succumb to hypothermia. Staff members are attempting to reduce the amount of ice by using heat guns and compressors to melt the ice and manually removing it. This has caused anxiety and stress for the animals and, as a result, they’re noticeably less active, spending the majority of their time below the surface. Though these animals have evolved to withstand the cold, they’ve become malnourished and can no longer maintain a healthy blubber supply leaving them unable to combat the frigid temperatures. . Another inspection of the “Whale Prison” in Srednyaja Bay, Russia, was conducted by the Primorsky Environmental Prosecutor’s Office on January 30th. The purpose of the inspection was to check on the condition of the 65 pinnipeds being held at the facility. Officials invited Lora Beloivan, director of the local rehabilitation center “Seal”, and veterinarian Pavel Chopenko to participate in the inspection, though they were not allowed to asses the health of the orcas. - Despite not being allowed to assess the whales, prosecutors reportedly witnessed an orca floating belly-up in its holding pen and described it as either dead or near death. This orca is most likely 1-year-old Cyril (Kirill) who was described as being in poor condition and suffering from frostbite, as well as pneumonia. It has since been suspected that Cyril died the day after the inspection on January 31st. New results from the past inspection revealed that staphylococcus, candida, and other opportunistic infections were found in the skin samples taken from all 11 orcas. The skin of the orcas was described as being “thickly seeded with bacteria” and covered in lesions possibly caused by fungal infections. - The inspection also revealed the deplorable conditions that the 65 pinnipeds are being subjected to at the “Whale Prison.” Photos from the inspection revealed the horribly small and barren pens that the spotted seals are being held in. Judging from the photos, one can assume that these animals are suffering immensely. Wonderful news! The owners of the "Whale Prison" in Srednyaya Bay have been charged with cruelty to animals by the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Khabarovsk Territory. Captured during the summer, 101 whales arrived at the Whale Prison between September and October and have remained in the prison's unsanitary, tight confines ever since. The 90 beluga calves were first subjected to a 30-day quarantine period in 2.5m (8ft) transportation containers (beluga calves average 5ft long - an 8ft container is wholly inadequate) before being split into age groups and forced into overcrowded sea pens. The killer whale calves received similar treatment and were housed in small groups in converted aviaries. . A major issue the Whale Prison has faced is the cold. The bay has almost completely frozen over due to the extreme temperatures and is causing some of the already compromised animals to suffer the consequences of frostbite, whether that be their skin sloughing off or death. Two orcas and three beluga whales are believed to have passed away, although the Whale Prison has said four of these animals were released, most likely as a cover-up. News that these vile people are finally being brought to justice is very welcomed, as is news that "investigators will promptly take comprehensive measures to return all marine mammals to their natural habitat". Unfortunately, a court still needs to grant a court order to release the whales before any of them can be relocated to rehabilitation centers. This is likely to be a lengthy process. Russian Minister of Natural Resources & Environment Dmitry Kobylkin said in a statement: "It’s absolutely clear to us that the orcas need to be released. No one has any objections today to releasing them, but the important thing is to do it correctly, so as not to lose a single individual". Kobylkin’s statement follows social media posts from American actor, film producer, and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio who urged his social media followers to sign a petition calling for the release of the whales. . The 87 belugas and 11 killer whales were captured back in the summer and have spent over half a year confined to small, overcrowded sea pens. Within this time, they have become heavily dependent on their human care takers and will require a lengthy rehabilitation before release. This is complicated further by the age of the whales. They’re all very young, some less than a year old. Their young age means they lack vital skills and will need to be taught how to survive in the wild. This process will prove to be difficult unless they can be reunited with their families.
