Like many athletes, I go through periods of loving and hating the way I move. 2 years ago I completely rebuilt my squat after a back injury. I used to bounce out of the bottom and would lose core tension that eventually caused back pain. The months of rebuilding taught me so much about my patterns and even helped me design the Straight Shot Training and Reslient programs from @straightshottraining
More recently I've found I overload my knees in the squat by placing too much force in my toes and not enough in my heels. While not anything near my back pain, I've noticed my knees (specifically left) not feeling great during squats. Since basically ANY other movement feels totally fine, I knew it was my body's way of saying "Change something, I don't like your squat."
So that's what we're doing here. Gradually working back up while making little tweaks and trying to get back into the 400s by September. This workout from the other day was slow descent 3s around 75-80%

Getting rid of back pain due to improper deadlifting won't happen by just rolling out your back and taking it easy for a while, you have to fix the root of the issue. Creating tension creates stability, stability holds together your posture and position, and holding your posture and position is the key to lifting safely.
The Kettlebell Suitcase Deadlift helps teach you how to create a lot of tension throughout your core to keep your spine from getting pulled into a bad position by the offset load. When you go over to a barbell to lift afterwards, brace with that same internal tension and your deadlift will look and feel much better.

I program my own workouts half of the year and let another coach handle my workouts the other half. This keeps me from burning myself out on my own workout designs and challenges me in ways I wouldn't always think of doing for myself.

Give this circuit a try using weights that are decently heavy for the hang cleans. You can also sub dumbbells or kettlebells for the bar and do 3/4/6/7ea for the reps to make it difficult.

The lull before beginning my quest to eliminate pseudoscience from infiltrating the minds our future nurses, trainers, STEM workers, and chefs.
I was recently asked to teach a 3 credit nutrition course at Frederick Community College. As some of you know, I teach a personal training prep course there every spring that prepares students to sit for the NASM CPT exam. I've also taught weight training courses to future trainers at the college, but never this course. It's always been something I've longed to do, as the world of nutrition is muddied with misinformation and awash with unscientific catch phrases, fads, and alarmist propaganda. As part of my exercise science degree, I studied both nutrition for fitness and clinical nutrition and am humbled to have the opportunity to pass on what I've studied and experimented with over the past decade.

This week we move our athletes into a more strength biased program with working at higher percentages of their maxes (wherever they may be) and programming in heavier circuits and short, intense sprint conditioning workouts.
