I tend to read for myself with a very conversational style; I don’t usually use a spread, or have any set prompts or questions. I let the cards open the reading and then go from there. Questions arise spontaneously, or I ask for cards to represent this or that situation or experience. It’s very free-flowing and relaxed, but I was definitely reminded today that how you frame your questions or statements before you pull a card is so important. • In the midst of this morning’s conversation, I said “I want this so badly, I can’t wait for it to get here”, with a tinge of desperation and plenty of doubt that it could possibly show up for me. And I pulled 5 of Pentacles. At first I was like “WTF y’all.” And a beat later I realized the card was merely reflecting back to me my experience of not having “it” now or yet, and only experiencing that lack. So I reframed my statement. “I am so excited that this is on its way. I’m staying open to its arrival and enjoying the anticipation.” And I pulled 3 of Wands. I often read cards like a prayer, and here is one for all of us on a Sunday morning after a week of bullshit and then that Moon. • • May we be willing to see the other. May we be willing to bear the weight of the other. May we be willing to do the work of ferrying the other when they are blind, when they are weak, when they cannot see the way forward. May we be willing to cross borders and boundaries to ensure that others can claim their own bodily autonomy. May we claim our own. May we use our voice as a call to other voices. May a chorus of voices join our own, singing the same song. May we invite in the other, may we uplift the other, may we see no difference between personal and collective success. May we see no difference between personal and collective happiness. May we be willing to see personal deprivation and indignity as collective deprivation and indignity. May we be willing to see collective and community deprivation and indignity as our own. May we claim our sovereignty and yet dissolve any identity that attempts to remove us from the collective burden, the collective karma. May we be willing to bear the weight. May we bear it.

I thought I’d share a little reading I did for myself, just as a window into the conversation-with-the-cards style I tend to use, and also because this reading shows how Enneagram-specific interpretations can come through. • • When I pull in the morning, I often ask that the cards determine the direction of the reading. Like: hey, what do y’all want to talk about? And today it was 10 of Wands reversed. • • Ok....are you saying I need to drop some wands? 4 of Swords. So yes, I need to stop this frantic pace of work I do. • • What am I clinging to that doesn’t serve?, I ask, imagining all those wands like a security blanket, protecting me from being vulnerable to the world. 3 of Swords reversed. I’ve been healing for so long from my divorce that I haven’t noticed that it’s DONE. I’m using being in the ‘process’ as an excuse for failing to come OUT into the world, fully stitched back together. • • ok, so I need to open to the idea that I’m past that, fully. Page of Pentacles. Ok, now is the time to focus on what I really want to create from here. I have to opportunity to build the life I want, so what does that look like? • • What kind of life does my higher self want for me? Queen of Pentacles. • • If I continue on as I am now, what am I building? 5 of Pentacles Reversed. Carrying all those wands, merely succeeding in keeping the fear of destitution at bay....? Temperance=YES. (For me personally, Temperance, King of Cups and 3 of Cups always come along to say YES) • • So, what is the work above and the work below? Work above as in a shift in attitude and approach/work below as in action step on the ground. Above: 8 of Swords Reversed. Below: Ace of Swords. Ok, this reads absolutely as Enneagram work to me. The swords here as patterning and the need to move beyond the “only seeing what is unavailable to me, thinking myself incapable, doing-repressed” structure of my type. Right? 4 of Pentacles Reversed=YES. (I am a 4) • • So, this kind of stream-of-consciousness, no spread or positions to speak of style of reading is really so lovely and illuminating.
