I have been experimenting with this for a few days . I thought the earlier start would make me tired but it hasn’t . . . I have swapped opening my eyes and opening social media , my emails etc for getting up making a cup of tea and reading a book . . . I have to use social media , I have it read my emails and check my orders it’s my business and I love it , but taking that time for myself every day, has made me calmer , more focused and more productive . . . A few weeks ago I discovered @netgalley. NetGalley is a website where “professional readers” can sign up and receive advance review copies (ARC) from books that have not been published yet in exchange for honest reviews. I thought it was interesting so I joined the network and started requesting books. The first ARC I received was “The Happiness Project”, by Pippa James. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At the beginning of “The Happiness Project” we meet the three main characters, all mothers: hot-tempered, single Frankie, organised Alison and Kate, who is already a mother of two and is feeling less than excited about her new pregnancy. There isn’t a lot of context information about the characters and I found that confusing; after doing some online research I found out that THP is a sequel to another book by Pippa James, “I will survive”. I wish I had known this because reading THP first I felt I missed a lot of information about these characters. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Frankie, Alison and Kate meet on New Year’s Eve and decide to make resolutions or, as they decide to call them, a Happiness Project. Kate decides to chill and enjoy her pregnancy, Frankie resolves to sort out her financial life by finding a stable job - and keeping it, and Alison, who has just lost her mother-in-law, decides to get fit and make some changes in her family’s diet. As the year progresses, the three characters try to keep their Happiness Project going… but sometimes it isn’t easy: life gets in the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One aspect I really liked about the book is that the three women act as a wonderful support system for each other. In the book there are plenty of female characters and not all of them are friendly or supportive: we have ex-wives of boyfriends, queen-of-the-PTA mothers and even a close friend gone vegan that judges every single choice made by more “traditional” mothers. I first came up with the phrase "outer order contributes to inner calm," when I was writing #TheHappinessProject more than ten years ago. It was a "Secret of Adulthood" that I included in my "Happiness Project Manifesto.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I was touring for #TheHappinessProject, #HappieratHome, and even #BetterThanBeforeBook, I noticed how energized people became during any discussion of outer order. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Any time the subject came up, people laughed, talked among themselves, and were clearly interested. The fact is, for most people, outer order contributes to inner calm, and any time the subject arose, people wanted to hear more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even after spending all this time thinking about outer order, it still surprises me how much it matters—how much energy, focus, and cheer we get from creating outer order.
