Picked up another small Milwaukee impact bit set from the @thetoolshednz in the weekend. I have pretty much removed all of the contents except for two of the longer bits, then added sets of "generic" 100mm (4") hex and torx power bits that I bought a while ago. : These power bits were pretty inexpensive, and are the perfect length for most of the tasks that I use them for. They are also the reason why I haven't splashed out and bought any of the Wera hex/torx sockets. I’ve long wondered how Silca’s hex keys compare to the likes of PB Swiss and Wiha, and I’ve been asked it plenty, too. Tired of not having an opinion, I bought myself a set (thanks to @echelonsportsaustralia ). To get the elephant out of the room, Silca’s hex keys are made in Taiwan, using S2 steel sourced from Europe. I’ve heard suggestions they’re rebranded PB Swiss or similar, they are not. Having spoken with Josh Poertner (owner of @silca_velo ) on the topic, I believe these keys are made to Silca’s demands, and not simple rebrands. While the wooden box and bits of the classic HX-One are attractive to look at, I was drawn to the newer HX-Two which uniquely combines a full set of hex and Torx L-keys in a single plastic holder. The keys are generously long, and grippy in the hand. They closely mimic PB Swiss in this way, just a shy shorter (hex). While my sample size of one isn’t a good tell, they measure up pretty damn close to ideal tolerance. However, in my set, the 5mm was actually oversized by a hair, while the 4mm was just about dead on. Oversized keys provide a more secure hold in a fastener with less chance of camming out, however, they can prove a waste of time if fasteners are undersized. The Torx keys feel similarly on the larger size, which is exactly how I like them for bicycle use. I’ve had my PB Swiss for years and years and functionally they’re still like new. It’s too early for me to make the same judgement for Silca, but so far, they feel good to use. The ball ends aren’t quite as nice as PB, but then the fit at the regular end is just a little more snug. These keys are certainly built to a pro level, and while they won’t replace my PB Swiss, I’d still happily use them. The price for the wooden boxed version remains a little excessive, but this set, which offers Torx too, is surprisingly great value. #cooltooltuesday #cooltools #hexkeys #torx #silca #bicycletools #handtools

While I was fishing a dropped seatpost wedge out of a frame yesterday, I was reminded of another wedge... These unassuming Torx bits from Wera offer a subtle taper, or wedge. They’re specifically designed for oversized or stripped Torx bolt heads, and certainly fit in tighter than anything else I have in the Workshop. Frankly, these are still brand new. I haven’t stripped Torx bolts for years since moving to quality Euro tools, but still, it’s nice knowing I have the option. And I’m sure they’d be great inside a stripped hex fastener, too.
