"If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. If I had it to do again, I would travel lighter next time. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies." . - N. Stair #MadeRight #VillagesNotFactories

“I wanted to know the rules before breaking them, so with these techniques at the core, I look to explore and edit each method and combine the old and the new.” - @leocarltonheadwear In our latest zine, Fashion Craft Revolution, we spoke to 10 designers, whose work is embedded in craft and artisanship. Hailing from 7 countries across 5 continents, these designers are revolutionising the meaning of craft practices in the 21st century, from hand knit wonders by @theknitter to hand dyeing from @ka_sha_india. These designers prove that in the age of hyper-mechanisation in the fashion supply chain, the beauty of hand techniques have a lasting aesthetic appeal. Read the stories of @_naushadali_, @ka_sha_india, @oshadi_collection, @Ethnikbytundeowolabi, @cedric250, @i.n.d.o.i, @ode.to.odd, and @gabrieleskucas, @theknitter, and @leocarltonheadwear in our zine, at the link in bio. *** Our latest fanzine 004: FASHION CRAFT REVOLUTION is a beautifully designed and illustrated 104-page issue that cleverly explains how craft intersects with the identity and culture of communities the world over. The fashion industry has spent more than thirty years obsessed with speed, volume and identical flawless production, whilst slow, ancient crafts with their individual variations are increasingly undervalued. Consequently, the diversity of our global craft heritage is disappearing. Within the issue, we commemorate the heritage stories of global crafts and celebrate the revolutions taking place in the age of the Anthropocene. ⚠️ Fashion’s pollution problem needs our attention ⚠️ In our zine issue 3, Fashion Environment Change, @lilianliu wrote, “In one season’s wardrobe clear out, each Briton throws seven items of clothing in the trash, on average… Not only do we waste precious natural resources and energy in creating the textiles, but decomposing fabrics release methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Chemicals and dyes from clothes also contaminate soils and waters. Polyester alone takes up to 200 years to biodegrade.” “Brands must minimise waste generation at each step of the design and production process. Governments should put in place strong policies that address pre- and post-consumer waste, and make donating and recycling textiles more convenient – if not compulsory.” Let’s use our voices, write to our policy makers (‍♂️‍♀️‍♀️ask them about Extended Producer Responsibly ‍♂️‍♂️‍♀️) and remember that #LovedClothesLast. #TradeFairLiveFair

Maryssa Cook-Obregón’s (@utile_et_dulce), In Bauhaus We Trust - Why Art and Craft are Equal, explores the origin of the arts and crafts movement, and the Bauhaus movement’s roots in architecture, led by Walter Gropius. In her essay, she explains, “Today in the twenty-first century, we live in increasingly connected and globalised societies, where we are able to observe and understand the impacts of our actions and conversely, how the actions of others impact us” *** Our latest fanzine 004: FASHION CRAFT REVOLUTION is a beautifully designed and illustrated 104-page issue that cleverly explains how craft intersects with the identity and culture of communities the world over. We recently learned that fast fashion giant Mango (MNG) has produced a bag almost identical to our Carly Bag - a product that I designed in 2017. On a personal level, I’m not flattered. I put many hours into the design process of the Carly Bag. ‘Designer’ is just one of the many hats I wear as a busy small business owner. Will Mango reimburse me for my time, creativity and intellectual property? From a business and legal perspective, we’re frustrated. It’s common to justify imitations by saying ‘everyone copies’ or ‘we’re just following the trends’ or blatant denial, despite evidence to the contrary. Usually, a minor tweak to the design - the handle in this case - makes it different enough to not be considered a copy. We imagine that Mango’s version of our Carly Bag will be seasonal - it will come and go in the blink of an eye as fast fashion does, with little regard for the broader impacts or the origins of the design. We’re not alone - we‘ve observed other brands and, more recently, cultures who are also frustrated with being copied. Most importantly, we’re deeply disappointed for our Fair Trade artisan partners who handcraft this bag. Our long term partnership is built on mutual respect and authentic collaboration. We take the time to understand their culture, craft skills and raw materials. Equally, they appreciate our orders and put great effort into bringing our designs to life. For 15 years we’ve been designing products for our customers with the ultimate goal of providing regular orders, paying fair prices and so much more for our talented artisan partners. Are brands jumping on the current trend of ‘ethically, artisan and hand-made’ doing the same? Do they genuinely care about building sustainable partnerships with the people who are making their products? Every single item in our collection has the power to change lives. When one of our original designs is reproduced by another brand for their own profit, they are potentially taking work away from the artisans that the design was intended for. This further prevents those women from earning a stable living wage and empowering themselves out of poverty. We would love to read your thoughts. S xx
