Today I did an incredible race! ‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️ #deejaytrisenigallia 30th/505 - 4th in my category, i was really close to the podium. In the run fraction I lost the time that it can make the difference but I'm really really happy! I can see the result of every sacrifice. Thanks @cesenatriathlon @andrea.gabba @artusianabike Now I know that podium isn't utopian! Purtroppo la frazione di corsa non è andata al meglio ed ho perso il tempo che mi avrebbe permesso di andare per la prima volta a podio ma non mi importa, sono troppo contento! Ironman was something I'd always aspired to do when living in Hawaii, but never in my wildest dreams thought I could. 3 years ago, my girls watched their Uncle Jim finish IM Boulder. After the race, my eldest, Lily, looked up to me and asked if girls could be Iron'wo'man. Without hesitation, I answered, "absolutely, watch me". Words I immediately regretted saying, but it got me to take the first step to finally pursue this “impossible” dream. I couldn't have done it without my amazing coach (@carina.clancy). When I began my training, I could barely doggy paddle the short end of the pool, and my biking experience could only be described as “beach cruiser” style. In six short months, she trained me up to Ironman level. Giving up was never an option. Ironman Madison 2018 even asked me to be a featured “Inspired Athlete”, so I could share my parent’s story of survival being a Vietnamese Refugee as this was the foundation of my inner strength to finish the race. I also benefited from the amazing support of my wonderful husband. He was my chef/nutritionist, my alarm clock, my massage therapist, my bike technician, my cheerleader, and my emotional support. I'll never forget crossing the finish line and seeing my girls in tears. I thought something happened, but they said they were crying because they were proud of me. Wow. That feeling has driven me to begin my training for one more IM. To train even harder this time around for the Louisville IM in October 2019 and to document my training. I want to help encourage and challenge others that it doesn’t necessarily have to be an IM, but anything you once thought was impossible is indeed possible. ~ Yen Adams [@the.yen.factor] . I do not look like an athlete. In fact, I always told people I was allergic to exercise. So how did I end up being a triathlete? I was trying to find a way to walk again. After over 30 years of searching for an answer - I finally had a diagnosis. I had a name – Ankylosing Spondylitis. But what good was a name if there was no cure? Ankylosing Spondylitis is a very serious and incurable form of arthritis that was slowly robbing me of the ability to walk. Four years ago, in desperation, I started walking in a hydrotherapy pool with the help of a physiotherapist. After a few months someone suggested I have a goal to work towards. So I told my husband I was going to do a Triathlon. He refused to discuss it with me. But I persevered, and he raced next to me at my first try-a-tri race for support. Over the last few years I have not only thrown away my crutches. I have even found a way to run against all odds. My doctors didn’t think it was possible, but I am nothing if not stubborn. I now race for the arthritis foundation. I have completed two 70.3 distance races, several sprint Triathlons and numerous half marathons. I will attempt my first full Ironman in March 2020. My husband again was not terribly impressed when I told him about this one, but he will come around. He usually does. He has now done four full Ironman races himself and wants a spot to Kona. But I now have a goal, a focus I am aiming for – the Taupo Ironman. That is my year; that is my day; that day I will call myself an Ironman. No, my husband isn’t happy about it, but he loves me enough to let me Tri. I still have bad days. But one day I will have to retire my running shoes and accept a life in a wheelchair. Until that day I will do everything I can to spread awareness for this disease. Because anything is possible if you want it badly enough. ~ Kylie Frost .
