I like to periodically try this shirt on just as a reminder of how far this journey has taken me. This used to be my favorite shirt and it’s the only one that I’ve kept as I’ve grown smaller and donated clothes. It’s still so insane to me that the before picture was only from this past October. 8 months ago I decided to start this crazy journey that I’m on! And I think about what if I hadn’t started or gained the motivation to keep going- I’d still be stuck in the same limited life that I was living, feeling sorry for myself and eating my feelings everyday. My quality of life and health has improved 100 times over. I feel good now and love being active. I used to feel like a prisoner in my body and I won’t ever take for granted the freedom that I have now. What a difference one year and 85 pounds can make.... just wow! Not just looks or weight... but relationships... friendships... and your way/ quality of life! One year ago I was struggling... my health was struggling, my relationships with family and friends was struggling, I had zero confidence, and was going through an emotional time. I didn’t like who I saw in the mirror, I didn’t recognize her anymore.... Any time life threw me something, I turned to food. With happiness, with stress, with sadness, and with celebration; my world revolved around food. It has always been a comfort for me. And this is where it lead me. I thank God every day for giving me my life back! For allowing me to meet the awesome drs of Erlanger who continues to show their support! For giving me this (not so easy, but worth it) journey! My family and friends have been so supportive and wonderful and you really learn who your friends are! When you go to your seminars believe them when they tell you you will lose some friends along the way, people you have always had in your life and always supported.. but when you are no longer the one whose life is a mess or no longer the miserable one of the group they become threatened and that’s okay. Let them go. There are plenty of other who will support you... some you know, others you’ve never spoke to before face to face! “Pay close attention to people who don’t clap when you win”. Support your friends with all of their endeavors and adventures. Be kind, build others up. 11 years cancer free! In 2008 a coworker of mine had a routine skin check and found out she had melanoma. I made a comment about a questionable spot on my right thigh. Being super freckly I just always assumed it was a dark freckle. She convinced me to go get it checked. A few days later I got the call saying it was Stage II malignant melanoma. By the end of the week I was having surgery. They took a shockingly large chunk out of my right thigh and performed a sentinel node biopsy. I was lucky to learn the cancer had not yet hit the lymph node and the margins were good. But they said I was a few months away from this hitting my lymph node and moving to stage III which would have meant chemo and possibly radiation. A few freaking months away!!! The important lesson here... EARLY DETECTION IS KEY! Wear sunscreen people!!! It can happen to anyone. Get checked annually. It takes almost no time and is typically covered by insurance. I know I’m pasty white and couldn’t tan if my life depended on it but I have to believe no tan is worth getting that call telling you there are cancer cells in your body.
