UPPER BODY TRAINING FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL LIFTERS

If we have to pick TWO upper body PUSH accessory exercises for intermediate weightlifters, they would be dips and strict presses because these two transfer directly to the ability to lock the weight overhead. What are your favourite upper body push accessory exercises and why?

Dips primarily strengthen the shoulders, especially the front delts which lead to better front rack position. It also strengthen all muscle groups linking the shoulders and triceps for better overhead strength. It is important for intermediate lifters to at least perform dips/ strict presses twice a week to improve their overhead strength and stability.

1️⃣When performing the weighted #dip, Chinese #weightlifters are taught to hang the weight behind and not in front. This resembles how the load is placed when the bar is overhead in a snatch or jerk, i.e. behind ears and above traps.

2️⃣By hanging the weight behind, the torso is forced to stay more upright, the chest is open throughout and you get a nice squeeze of the mid back at the top position.

3️⃣Try hanging the weight in front, and you will find yourself leaning more forward and using more chest muscles. This way of performing the dips transfer less to weightlifting.
