No this isn’t an April fools, I’m officially back and I can’t believe this is my very first post of 2019! Taking a small break from social media has been good and I recommend everyone does it once in a while (but I’m glad to me back!) Anyway, this is the stunning beach of West Bay in Dorset! West Bay was previously the main commercial trade point of Bridport exporting its ropes and nets. Now it is a great holiday/day trip location that attracts tourists but also remains as a busy fishing port. Most recently, West Bay has been used as the base location for the TV show ‘Broadchurch’ quite a lot of the show was filmed right on this beach. A couple of days before visiting part of the cliff crumbled into the sea which you can see if you zoom in on the photo. Cliff falls are quite common here, with a 1000 tonnes collapsing in this instance.

WEST BAY RISING . . . The skies were crystal clear yesterday morning and although it was bitterly cold I really enjoyed myself in the company of @capturing.the.elements - an Astro genius (go give him a follow for epicness)!! Also great to meet @tonywoodphotography, a talented photographer and top bloke! The time has come for me to finally ditch the lens that I used to capture this image. Having dropped it from shoulder height a couple of years ago, it has never been sharp since. At 14mm it is also far too wide. I like to capture the Milky Way and all it's detail with a longer focal length so today I've purchased a Samyang 24mm f/1.4 lens that will be solely used for astrophotography... When we look up at the stars we are looking back in time. Most of the stars we see with the naked eye at night are within a few hundred lightyears. Now the mind-blowing bit: To work out the size of a light-year, take the circumference of the earth (24,900 miles), lay it out in a 'straight line'. Now multiply the length of the line by 7.5 - that distance equates to 1 light-second. Place 31.6 million 'straight lines' end to end. The resulting distance is almost 6 trillion (6,000,000,000,000) miles! That's just one single light-second! Mind officially broken... . .
