Kozhemyako, President of Ocean Futures Society Jean-Michel Cousteau, and Executive Director of The Whale Sanctuary Project Charles Vinick, to rehabilitate and release the 10 orcas and 87 beluga whales being held in the “whale jail” since last summer who were captured for sale to marine parks in China. This news clip shows the facility in Srednaya Bay where the whales are being held captive in very small pens. The winter ice had to be continuously broken apart with shovels so that the whales could get to the surface to breathe and be fed, thankfully spring now brings warmer temperatures and less ice. WHALE-AID RUSSIA! The team of experts brought together by the Whale Sanctuary Project is preparing for travel to Russia on April 3rd, and will be assembling in Srednyaya Bay to work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as Russian scientists to assess the condition of the 10 orcas and 87 beluga whales who are being held in the “whale jail,” and to advise the government on their health and how they can be returned to the open ocean. Along with oceanographer Jean-Michel Cousteau, the Whale Sanctuary Project team is led by Executive Director Charles Vinick, who managed the reintroduction of the orca Keiko to his home waters off the coast of Iceland in the 1990s. Other members include Jeff Foster and Ingrid Visser who are among the leading experts in whale and dolphin rehabilitation and release, and Russian veterinarian Tatyana Denisenko. Some background on the Russian whale situation: Last November, reports began to emerge that more than 100 orcas and beluga whales had been captured and were being held in small, crowded pens in Srednyaya Bay on Russia’s far east coast. Quickly termed the “whale jail”. Worldwide outrage at the treatment of these whales has been growing since the time the first whales were captured last summer. The orcas and belugas were captured from the Sea of Okhotsk, on the east coast of Russia, by a group of companies who reportedly intended to sell them to entertainment parks in China. (A single orca can fetch more than $6 million in the booming Chinese theme park industry.) There are already at least 76 dolphinariums and marine parks in China, and at least 25 more planned for construction over the next few years. The Whale Sanctuary Project has organized a team of experts from non-profits and other NGO’s to go to Srednyaya Bay in Primorsky Region on the Far East coast of Russia and assess the condition of the orca and beluga whales being held there. The team is prepared to travel to Srednyaya Bay as soon as approval is given by the federal government. This is a developing situation. Tomorrow, they’ll be heading to Srednyaya Bay (near Vladivostok on Russia’s Far East coast), where the 10 orcas and 87 beluga whales are languishing in icy waters. And when we’ve completed the visit, the team will work together to submit a report to the government, advising them on restoring the whales to health so they can be returned to the open oceans. We have set up a special fund to meet the costs of this initial visit, since we are bringing in people from around the world who are experts on marine mammal rescue, rehab and release. We have yet to raise a further $25,000 to cover these costs.
