Have you ever met anyone famous? The only celebs I’ve ever seen in real life are Jamie East (minor TV presenter and DJ. He was in Padstow, if you’re interested and a lot shorter than I’d imagined) and Donna off Emmerdale when I went to watch The Mighty Boosh live in Sheffield. (She was with an actor also from Emmerdale, whose name escapes me and they were enjoying being stared at by the peasants). Anyway, that leads me (kind of) onto my next thought. I had a dream last night (yeah, yeah, I know. Bear with me) about Bradley Cooper. He’d come to town to do an ‘arty’ interpretation of Jack and The Beanstalk. He was very pleasant, just so you know and I enjoyed his portrayal of Jack immensely. Then who do you think I stumbled upon? Only bloody Lady Gaga! So, always one step ahead, I asked her if I could have a selfie for the ‘Gram. Dream Lady Gaga, you’ll be pleased to hear, was also lovely and most obliging, but seeing as it was only a dream, I don’t have the photo to show you and not just because it was a product of my fevered imagination but because being a dream, I couldn’t get my phone to work So, I’m happy to report, you now all know that the modern equivalent of not being able to dial a number in a sleep emergency is not being able to open the camera app to take a selfie. Not only that, my phone wouldn’t shift off the X Factor website! Truly the stuff of nightmares

Brilliant picture by @the_north_yorkshire_gallery There is some great folklore and history with this place. Whitby was originally called Sinus Fari by the Brigantes who were a Celtic tribe controlling large sections of Northern England - but by 71 AD they had been conquered by the Romans. In 657 AD it became known as Streonshalh when the then Christian King of Northumbria, Oswy founded a monastery and Abbey there. He was a busy bee. Sadly those bloomin' Vikings arrived in 867 AD and guess what - aye, they destroyed the monastery and renamed the settlement Whitby from the old Norse for White Settlement. During the medieval period Whitby was a place of major religious significance, it was one of the earliest and most important centers of Christianity in England. After the dissolution of the monasteries (we can blame horrible Henry VIII for that) in 1540, Whitby remained a small fishing community of approximately 200 people until the Elizabethan period when Alum was discovered and mining began, the port then grew in maritime and commercial significance.
