During Vinitaly I had the opportunity to attend a very interesting seminar regarding the different styles of Pinot Gris. Consorzio delle Venezie took the participants through a journey of one of the most iconic grape varieties in the world. The seminar was held by Alessandro Torcoli, editor and director of the magazine Civiltà del bere, and Albino Armani, president of Consorzio Tutela Vini delle Venezie. Style is a key word in an international perspective, we tasted Pinot Grigio from different countries, in order to place the Italian Style on the world map. In the glass we had an Italian one, a Pinot Gris from Alsace and a New Zeland one. 1961 was a fabulous vintage in Bordeaux where it was hardly impossible to make a bad wine. The minimum was a good one and most wineries made very good to excellent wines, most of which are still drinking nicely and will continue to do so for many years to come. So no wonder that last Sunday this 1961 Clos Fourtet in a German R&U bottling was really singing. So balanced and elegant with wonderful black currant fruit, cedarwood and earthy minerality, smooth as silk with a lot of depth and basically ageless - WT95. Domaine Peyre Rose was created in the early 90's by Marlène Soria in Saint Pargoire, between Béziers and Montpellier. The 25 ha estate is mainly planted with red grapes (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan), with 2 ha of white grapes (Mostly Rolle and Roussanne). The estate is certified in organic agriculture and produce some beautiful wines very concentrated with long maturation. . . The production is very limited and the demand is crazy ! So happy to get one in my cellar ( I drank a Clos des Cistes 07 last Christmas and it was awesome ! ) ... . . The Syrah Leone Cuvée is about notes of black fruit, garrigue, leather and tobacco with great spicy notes. The palate is rich, powerfull, the tannins are silky and well integrated...
