On May 11th, I will be meeting with other survivors in Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of the staggering reality of maternal health in the United States. Many are surprised to learn the rates of Maternal Death and Near-Death are on the rise. Postpartum Hemorrhage, Pre-Eclampsia, HELLP Syndrome, Thrombotic Pulmonary Embolism, Placenta Accreta, Amniotic Fluid Embolism, Infection and Cardiovascular Diseases are just a handful of the deadly conditions that are killing new mothers each day. Despite spending over $3 Trillion on healthcare, the U.S. ranks 46th for maternal mortality, the worst of all industrialized nations. (source: http://www.merckformothers.com/docs/USA_fact_sheet.pdf ) . An average of 700-900 mothers lose their lives each year in the United States and more than 50,000 come extremely close to dying. I am one of them. These lost mothers leave gaping holes in new families and those who survive often have long lasting effects like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Postpartum Anxiety and Postpartum Depression, all of which prolong an already difficult physical recovery. To make matters worse, mental healthcare for maternal trauma survivors is abysmal, if it is available at all. Maternal Mortality and Morbidity deeply impact mothers and families during what should be a happy time celebrating the birth of a child. Sadly, many people simply aren't aware of these dangerous perinatal complications and don't know the symptoms that should trigger an immediate trip to the Emergency Room. . We are hoping to do our part to change this. Join the movement for Moms and Babies. It’s as simple as rolling up your sleeve to give blood at one of our #heroesformoms blood drives. (There will be a blood drive on the National Mall on May 11th! @heroesformoms) Every child should grow up with a mother. And every mother should have the privilege of living to raise her child. Motherhood shapes the future and we each have a role to play in making it safer. What will YOU do? #marchformoms @marchformoms #beyondmothersday

#repost from @stoptheclot . Tragically, too many lives are affected by blood clots, and too many lives are lost because public awareness about life-threatening blood clots is low. Studies show that fewer than 1 in 4 people have any recognition of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. Learn more about blood clot risks, signs and symptoms, and prevention by visiting www.stoptheclot.org. . Me again: Pregnant women are 3-4x more likely to develop blood clots than non-pregnant women, and the risk increases to 100-fold in the weeks following delivery. Know the risks. Know the signs. It may very well save your life. . #stoptheclot #spreadtheword #bcam #togetherwecan #sharetostoptheclot #womenandbloodclots #knowtherisks #knowthesigns #pulmonaryembolism #vte #pregnancy #pregnancyhealth #survivor #maternalnearmiss #mnmsurvivors

David and Roz Rowan lost their only child – their beautiful and talented daughter Alexandra – nearly six years ago to a massive pulmonary embolism. Since that time, they have dedicated their lives to honoring her legacy through the important work of the Alexandra L. Rowan Memorial Foundation, which includes the Rowan family’s tireless efforts to raise awareness about the blood clot risks associated with hormonal birth control and, most importantly, to prevent this type of tragedy from affecting other women and their families. If you or someone you know is using hormonal birth control or thinking about using hormonal birth control, please share Alexandra’s story with them in the few days remaining in Women’s Health Month, and also encourage them to use our Risk Assessment Tool to determine their blood clot risks. Alexandra’s father has written a book called “My Beautiful Memory,” telling the story of Alexandra’s life, and including several pieces of her literary work. . Click the link in our bio profile @stoptheclot for more information to share or visit @womenandclots on Instagram to find the Risk Assessment and purchase the book on Amazon. . . . . . #stoptheclot #womenandbloodclots #sharetostoptheclot #togetherwecan #bloodclots #bloodclots #DVT #deepveinthrombosis #PE #pulmonaryembolism #knowyourrisk #knowthesigns #knowmore #womenshealth #womenshealthmonth #birthcontrol #thepill

Happy New Year! As we kick-off 2019, I (like many others) are setting intentions/goals for the upcoming year. I’m re-energized and excited about things to come for The Quiet Clot and thought I’d introduce myself to my new followers and thank those who have supported my journey thus far. I started this community in July 2018 when I was literally told “I shouldn’t be alive” after going to Urgent Care for severe difficulty breathing and as a result being admitted to the ICU for 4 days. Through a series of blood tests and a CT scan Dr’s discovered I had Pulmonary Embolisms - several blood clots throughout my right lung and half of my left lung; Deep Vein Thrombosis - a 3” long clot in my right calf, which they think has been there for a couple years and a small quarter size clot to the right of my heart. Dr’s said the clots in my lungs had been there for 3 months and the cardiovascular benefits/endurance I built up from going to @flywheelsports 4-5 days a week since I ran the @chimarathon in Oct ‘17 allowed my heart to withstand the stress and therefore saved my life! I didn’t have any of the “traditional” symptoms/signs of a blood clot and was in absolute shock when they told me this was all a result of the birth control pill coupled with weekly air travel over the past 7 years, which they think escalated it. I am fortunate to make a full recovery, however over the past several month I’ve realized blood clots affect many people, but are seldom talked about. As a result, I have a newfound passion around this topic and have started “The Quiet Clot”, a community connected through blood clot awareness, prevention, support & recovery. I look forward to sharing my journey and connecting with each of you! Please feel free to tag a friend and invite them to join! Cheers to 2019 and all that it has in store! In celebration of #internationalwomensday we are sharing with permission, this wonderful post from maternal health advocate @caseycattell about one of our leading physicians in obstetrics and gynecology: This amazing lady and her team saved my life three years ago. I am thankful, grateful and blessed to call her my surgeon, doctor and friend. After Maternal Health Awareness Day, I was disappointed we didn’t get a picture of the two of us. Then a few weeks later, the RWJUH Foundation serendipitously called asking to do a piece on our doctor-patient experience after hearing my talk on January 23. Dr. Charletta Ayers and I had our photo shoot today and let me just tell you, there are no words to convey how thankful I am for her. There are just tears. And she knows. I truly believe God hand picked her to be my surgeon that day. She helped me go home to my family. So don’t mind me, I’m just having a hard core survivor moment over here. #maternalhealth #maternalmorbidity #maternalmortality #endmaternalmortality #safemotherhood #maternalnearmiss #survivormoment #survivormoments #grateful #thankful #blessed #survivorstrong #pesurvivor #pphsurvivor#womenandbloodclots #stoplooklisten #123formoms #rwjbarnabashealth #rutgers #rwjms #rwjuh #awarenessmatters #mhad #nurturenj
